- Meeting Overview:
The Ocean Town Council recently convened to discuss a variety of local issues, but the most contentious topic proved to be the debate surrounding the Kramer Court Bridge project. Residents and council members exchanged views on the project’s necessity, safety considerations, funding, and its potential impact on the community. This bridge project, along with discussions on affordable housing legislation, infrastructure improvements, and the regulation of electric bicycles, took center stage during the meeting.
The Kramer Court Bridge project sparked a discussion as one resident questioned the transparency of the funding and timeline, as well as the overall need for the bridge. The project’s management and community support were also topics of uncertainty. In response, it was clarified that the removal of six trees for the project had been verbally approved, and funding was expected from a house of worship, with a resolution to accept the funds scheduled for the next meeting.
Infrastructure was another key point of the meeting, with updates on the 22 Road program set to start imminently. This includes paving Roosevelt, Turner, and Walnut streets, alongside the anticipated completion of a building at 1,1 wipco. Most interior finishes at the building have been installed, and HVAC units are expected to arrive soon. A separate contract for the metal roof project was also discussed due to budget constraints, with the project’s completion and building’s opening expected by the end of April.
The council touched upon municipal building security, with a grant being considered for enhancements. Intersection improvements and sidewalk construction were also on the agenda, with a focus on streamlining traffic flow on Deal Road and addressing congestion issues by potentially allowing both lanes to go straight across Highway 35. Flooding concerns in Deal Park were acknowledged, with the council considering the use of open space money for mitigation and routine cleaning to prevent flooding and sinkholes.
Electric bicycles were on the council’s radar, as members debated the regulation of ebike usage on Township properties. The impact on commercial delivery services and the need for safety were weighed against the potential restrictions. The council recognized the need for legal guidance before drafting any ordinances on this matter.
The members also briefly discussed a new state development and Redevelopment plan, emphasizing the need to stay informed on the process. Logistical planning for local events and facilities was also addressed, including potential locations for a dog park and voter district changes to be communicated on the town’s website.
The potential use of AI for grant writing and managing bids was broached, with excitement around its benefits tempered by the need to understand its challenges. The naming and rededication of the Oakers Fireman’s Memorial Recreation Center was mentioned.
Lastly, the council discussed the success of a park that received private donations despite initial resistance, citing it as a positive community development. Upcoming events, including a St. Patrick’s Day celebration and an Easter egg hunt, were announced, along with condolences offered for a deceased community member. Routine consent agenda items were approved, and an ordinance amendment regarding flags and pennants was adopted. The meeting concluded with the resolution of a resident’s query about parking issues and confirmation of town-wide garage sales.
