- Meeting Overview:
In the latest Hillsdale Borough Council meeting, the adoption of two ordinances took center stage. The first ordinance, 24-7, allows the municipality to exceed budget appropriation limits and establish a cap bank, which was passed without public comment and unanimously voted in by the council. Similarly, ordinance 24-8, which enables various public improvements and acquisitions for the borough’s swim pool utility, was also adopted unanimously following a quiet public hearing.
Detailed discussions at the council meeting also addressed the impact of shared services and potential billing on residents with regards to paid Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). This topic generated debate, as the Ambulance Committee is considering collaboration with other towns to mitigate costs.
Another community-centric debate involved the proposal by the Economic Development Committee to designate the downtown area as in need of rehabilitation. The committee is expected to propose a direction to the council within a month. The Environmental Commission’s initiatives also emerged as a point of community interest, particularly its collaboration with Ridgewood for styrofoam recycling and the Seedling Distribution event.
In addition, a report from the borough engineer, Nick, detailed ongoing paving projects and grants, and the George White School’s Capital Improvement plans for renovation, which align with the borough’s master plan, were also discussed.
During the meeting, the council examined several resolutions from the consent agenda, pulling items for thorough discussion before passing them unanimously. Among the detailed resolutions passed, the council addressed a change order related to a bid for work that encompassed mold remediation and reconstruction not included in the original scope. Importantly, it was clarified that the cost of this additional work would be covered by an insurance claim, not affecting taxpayer funds.
Public concerns were voiced about the potential development of a contaminated property on Hillsdale Avenue, formerly known as the Tandy Allen property. The council reassured that the new owners were well-informed about the necessary permits and regulations, emphasizing transparency and regulatory compliance in property development.
Looking ahead, the council discussed technological upgrades, including improvements for live streaming council meetings via YouTube, which will continue to be utilized. The possibility of enhancing cellular coverage near the high school by installing a mini tower on borough-owned property was also explored.
Community events and collaborations were not left out of the council’s purview. The upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade and the opening day event for the Hillsdale Public School Association (HPSA), complete with activities and food vendors, were announced.
