- Meeting Overview:
The Union County Board of Commissioners recently tackled a range of topics including financial resolutions, community events, and initiatives supporting individuals with autism. The emphasis on autism awareness and fiscal responsibility stood out among the discussions.
Members of the public raised concerns over several resolutions pertaining to spending on county facilities and services. Issues cited included consulting and paper shuffling expenditures for the Union County Courthouse, solar engineering at Galloping Hill Golf Course, and architectural and management services for the Warren Ano Ice Rink. The public also expressed apprehensions about the Ashbrook Clubhouse operations and a residency waiver within the Department of Human Services. Following this, the board members engaged in discussions to clarify the resolutions’ details, addressing the transparency and necessity of the expenditures.
During the session, the topic of autism awareness was a focal point. A commissioner announced that the Union County Courthouse would be illuminated in blue on April 2nd in recognition of Autism Awareness Day. Furthermore, the board highlighted an autism acceptance celebration planned for April 20th, encouraging county residents to join in support.
Commissioner James E. Baker expressed his appreciation to the county’s department heads, staff, and fiscal committee for their diligent work on the budget, emphasizing the collective effort required to manage county finances effectively. Similarly, Commissioner Rebecca Williams, while discussing the sensory-friendly event, also contributed to the sentiment of gratitude towards county employees and departments for their service to the community.
He also commended the educational facilities at both the Union County Vocational School and Union County College for their positive impact on the community.
Commissioner Michèle S. Delisfort expressed her appreciation for a recent performance at the Union County Performing Arts Center and announced an upcoming campaign focusing on alcohol awareness in the county. Vice Chairwoman Lourdes M. Leon spoke about the Department of Parks and Recreation’s efforts in organizing a job fair for summer positions, which represents the board’s initiative to provide employment opportunities and engage the youth during the summer season.
As the meeting progressed, another commissioner discussed the Women’s History Month events and a packing event aimed at supporting female service members stationed overseas.
The atmosphere of the meeting was characterized by expressions of gratitude and a focus on the upcoming primary election, with information provided about voter party affiliation deadlines.
