- Meeting Overview:
In the latest Cranbury Township Committee meeting, residents of Station Road presented pressing traffic safety issues, prompting a response from the committee to seek long-term solutions. Beyond traffic concerns, the committee discussed a range of topics, including mental health education, substance abuse prevention, and the introduction of new ordinances.
Residents of Station Road voiced their concerns regarding the persistent issues of speeding and unsafe driving. They reported that temporary measures, like unmanned police cruisers and speed signs, had little effect on curbing the problem. The community members suggested more permanent solutions, such as the installation of a forced turn island or the adjustment of traffic light timings, to slow down speeding vehicles. The residents also stressed the need for a consistent law enforcement presence and the implementation of traffic calming measures, like speed bumps, to enhance safety.
The committee’s response acknowledged the significance of these safety concerns. They referenced previous attempts to introduce traffic calming measures and the difficulties encountered in obtaining approvals from county authorities for certain initiatives. The committee assured residents that they were seeking solutions and collaborating with county and state agencies to address the traffic problems on Station Road.
In addition to traffic safety, the meeting highlighted the community’s involvement in various events and initiatives. The Municipal Alliance’s contributions to National Night Out and a Cyber safety presentation were discussed, as well as the library’s event for the holy Festival and the success of the school’s Parent Academy. The importance of community engagement and collaboration was emphasized throughout the reports on these activities.
Dean Clay, the technology librarian from the Cranbury Public Library, expressed appreciation for the National Library Week proclamation and discussed the library’s new digital streaming service, Canopy, and other services provided to the community. The committee also praised the Environmental Commission for their program on sustainability and discussed ways to promote the library survey through township news channels.
Joan Charwin, chair of the Municipal Alliance, outlined the committee’s achievements and goals, including the organization of the Cranbury School Jam Fest and various efforts to promote drug and alcohol awareness. The Alliance’s display of a quilt representing 30 years of drug-free fairs received positive attention. Additionally, plans for a health and wellness fair to coincide with National Night Out were discussed.
The committee also acknowledged the implementation of mental health and substance use education programs at Princeton High School, which were well-received by students. The Alliance’s role in providing information and giveaways at community events, as well as promoting the police department’s medication Dropbox, was commended.
Furthermore, Drug Take Back Day was discussed, emphasizing the importance of safely disposing of old prescription medications to prevent potential misuse. The committee highlighted various free virtual trainings and webinars offered to the public to increase awareness about mental health and substance abuse prevention. Upcoming events such as mental health awareness day and Red Ribbon Week were also mentioned.
A project proposal by a Girl Scout for creating a monarch way station in the Cranbury Brook reserve was met with praise and approved by the committee.
Two ordinances were introduced for their first reading. One of these ordinances was related to tree removal and replacement. Additionally, appointments to the parks and recreation commission were announced, recognizing the importance of community involvement in recreation and leisure activities.
Lastly, the meeting addressed vacancies on the historic preservation committee and the municipal alliance, inviting volunteers to step forward and contribute to these vital community organizations.
