- Meeting Overview:
The Maple Shade Town Council meeting, while covering a range of community and legislative issues, was notably marked by discussions surrounding a local gun range, eliciting concerns from residents over safety, noise, and the range’s tax-exempt status. This issue, alongside other topics such as the introduction of new ordinances, volunteer appreciation, and the announcement of a council member not seeking re-election, shaped the narrative of the council’s proceedings.
A resident’s voiced concerns about the gun range captured the council’s attention, highlighting the noise, vibration, and safety challenges posed by the facility. The resident, while recognizing the Council’s efforts, voiced frustration over the protracted nature of the issue, even proposing a temporary shutdown of the gun range as a measure to address the problem until a more permanent solution could be established.
In addition to the gun range discussion, the Council addressed several ordinances. Ordinance number 20-24-10, dealing with a tree removal and replacement program, was introduced and scheduled for a public hearing on May 23, 2024. Furthermore, ordinance number 20-24-7 was discussed, which pertains to the repeal of a previous ordinance and the permitting of certain classes of cannabis businesses within the township boundaries. Another ordinance, 20-24-8, which involves the repeal of a regulation concerning the Township Fire Department, was also brought up for public hearing; however, no public comments were made on either of these legislative items.
The consent agenda featured various items, including the declaration of a township block as tax-exempt and the appointment of a special law enforcement officer. The Council approved the expenditure list and the March 2024 meeting minutes. Additionally, in a move reflecting the Council’s administrative due diligence, a mistake in the repeal of an ordinance was addressed.
Community involvement and initiatives were central to the Council’s agenda, with the township’s success in securing over $1 million in grants and project funding within the year’s first four months being a significant highlight. The Council provided details on the annual townwide yard sale and the upcoming household cleanup initiative, encouraging residents’ participation and adherence to guidelines. A partnership with Sustainable New Jersey was discussed to promote residential energy efficiency. The removal of a damaged playground slide at Woodlon Park and the planting of trees in honor of Arbor Day were also reported.
The meeting covered a broad spectrum of community events, including the registration for the fall soccer league, Lil Seuss chefs cooking school, and the ongoing football carnival at Asus field. The Council expressed their appreciation to volunteers for their contributions to the town’s activities. The announcement of a council member’s decision not to run for re-election due to personal reasons marked a moment of transition within the Council.
Additionally, the police department’s successful “bring your kids to work day” and the participation of the Department of Public Works (DPW) in the event were highlighted as examples of community outreach.
The financial health of the township was also addressed, with a report on the current fund balances as of March 31st presented to the Council.
