- Meeting Overview:
The Union School Board recently convened to address several issues, with the most focus on the implementation and success of an energy savings program that exceeded expectations, and the discussion of student well-being, including the support for grief counseling and awareness of mental health services. The energy savings program, spearheaded by Schneider Electric, reported a 1% increase in savings beyond projections and solar panels operating at 101% efficiency. Additionally, the board discussed the importance of grief counseling services and recognized the contributions of staff and community members in supporting student and staff mental health.
During the meeting, a representative from Schneider Electric presented a detailed update on the district’s energy savings improvement program. The solar panels, LED lighting, and HVAC systems upgrades were among the various energy-efficient measures implemented across the district. Notably, the solar panels were reported to be operating at 101% of the expected output. The energy savings from these improvements were highlighted as an achievement, with the district enjoying a cost approximately five times lower than traditional grid electricity.
The cost savings were further underlined by the locked-in rate for solar energy, which is set to increase by only 1.5% annually over a 15-year period, offering a stable and predictable energy cost as opposed to the fluctuating rates of traditional utility bills. The board engaged in discussions about the energy usage across different school buildings, inquiring into the criteria for the placement of solar panels and considering future upgrades, such as the proposed roof replacement at Washington School, which is intended to integrate solar panels.
The implementation of the energy savings program aligns with the district’s broader environmental and financial stewardship goals. By focusing on the three schools with the largest square footage, the district maximizes the potential savings and impact of the solar project.
In keeping with the board’s holistic approach to education, discussions also centered around student well-being. The board expressed satisfaction with the incorporation of Arab American Heritage Month activities into the curriculum. The meeting touched on the reported cases of Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB), with a breakdown of founded, unfounded, and inconclusive cases.
Grief counseling and mental health services surfaced as another focal point of the meeting. The board discussed a program called Imagine, which offers counseling to individuals experiencing various forms of loss. This initiative underscores the board’s recognition of the importance of mental health support for the school community.
Updates on school events and activities were provided, including the upcoming “Take Your Child to Work Day” and the Autism Awareness run. Additionally, the board moved through several resolutions, including a series of policy considerations, a residency resolution for informational purposes, and approvals regarding special related services and student discipline.
An incident involving an outage of the school’s computer systems was swiftly addressed, with the systems reported to be back up and running, thanks to the efforts of Aspire Technologies, the 24/7 firewall monitoring system.
Members of the community played an active role in the meeting, sharing information on grief therapy and mental health services, and expressing condolences for Congressman Donald Payne. The efforts of the school’s staff, including administrative assistants and bus drivers, were acknowledged, further highlighting the board’s appreciation for those who contribute to the district’s operations.
The fiscal committee and residency committee presented resolutions, with the board voting on issues such as an increase in the purchase order for special related services and the removal of students from the rolls due to residency issues. Members sought clarification on these topics.
Finally, the education student discipline committee presented resolutions for long-term suspensions for two students, which were approved after a vote.
