Acushnet Prioritizes Infrastructure and Environmental Protection in Latest Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Acushnet Conservation Commission focused on infrastructure improvements and farmland preservation during its recent meeting. Noteworthy discussions centered on the Slocum Street infrastructure project, which includes enlarging water mains and stormwater drains to alleviate local flooding. Concerns about stormwater treatment and compliance with MS4 stormwater regulations were raised, emphasizing the importance of proper water filtration before it enters the Acushnet River. Additionally, the commission addressed the potential for Acushnet to be designated as a town committed to farmland preservation.
During the meeting, a Request for Determination was filed by the Town Administrator, James Kelley, for substantial improvements along Slocum Street. The project, represented by CLA Hageman of LEC Environmental Consultants, includes upgrading an 8-inch water main to a 12-inch and a 24-inch storm drain to a 36-inch. A portion of the work falls within the 200-foot riverfront area and the 100-foot buffer zone to the Coastal Bank, prompting a detailed review. The project is set to replace outdated infrastructure without increasing the impervious area. The commission ultimately decided to issue a negative determination, moving the project forward without requiring a notice of intent.
In addition to infrastructure, the commission broached the subject of farmland preservation with the idea of designating the town as a Farmland Preservation area to be eligible for future funding. A special Zoom meeting was scheduled for May 1st to allow for a presentation and to gather input from the agricultural community.
The commission also planned for an executive session to discuss strategy related to pending litigation on two properties.
