Woodbridge School Board Plans for Budget Adoption and Tax Levy Reduction
- Meeting Overview:
The Woodbridge School Board has outlined plans for the final budget adoption set for May 2nd, which includes a 2% tax levy and anticipates a reduction of $13.20 for taxpayers, thanks to a full allotment of state aid. This development was part of the broader discussions held during the recent board meeting, which covered a range of topics including the introduction of a new phone system, network upgrades, recognition of student achievements, and various committee reports.
The board’s focus on the upcoming budget adoption was a significant item on the agenda, as it will affect the financial planning of the district as well as the pockets of the taxpayers. The members expressed their gratitude for receiving the full amount of state aid, a historic moment that will have a positive impact on the district’s finances. The business administrator was commended for his work on the responsible budget planning, which aims to address the $5 million in debt service while easing the tax burden slightly for the local community.
Adding to the financial discussions, Dr. Massimino provided a detailed overview of the tentative budget for the 2024-2025 school year. The presentation included information on revenues, expenditures, instructional programs, and facilities. Specifics were given on general revenues, local tax impact analysis, and expenditures by increase, which will be key factors in the final budget discussions scheduled for early May.
On the technological front, the board discussed the implementation of a new phone system designed to comply with recent legislation. This was coupled with the conversation on network upgrades following new construction at Avenel School 4 and 5.
The meeting also included a moment of recognition for the achievements of Woodbridge students. The student representative from Woodbridge High School, Stephanie Bedford, provided a report on activities across several schools in the district. Moreover, the newest Vice Principal at Woodbridge High School, Miss Broadway, was recognized, and a student, Abduraman Ol DOA, was honored with the 2024 Princeton Prize and Race Relations Certificate of Achievement.
These sessions are vital for understanding the concerns and insights of the community regarding the budget and other matters impacting the schools.
The superintendent’s report covered the student register and file drill report, suspension reports for both elementary and secondary schools, bomb threat reports, and attendance officers’ reports for March 2024. These items reflect the ongoing administrative and security measures in place to ensure the safety and proper tracking of the district’s students.
In addition to the superintendent’s report, 35 agenda items were presented and voted upon, with several abstentions noted on a professional development item due to the New Jersey School Boards Association conference. The various committees, including the Communication Policy and Planning Committee, Curricular/Extracurricular Activities and Technology Committee, Finance and Insurance Committee, Safety and Security Committee, Buildings and Grounds Committee, Dining and Transportation, and the Personnel Committee, presented reports which were then moved for adoption and voted on by the board.
Expressions of gratitude were a recurring theme throughout the meeting, with board members acknowledging the hard work of the district’s administration, the central office, and the students. The efforts of Woodbridge students, including those in special education, were applauded for their participation in the POAK walk for autism awareness. Middlesex College was commended for hosting a successful open house, and information was shared about the Summer EBT program, which supports students on free or reduced lunch.
A significant suggestion raised during the meeting was the request for students to be excused for the full three-day observance of Eid. This highlights the board’s attention to cultural sensitivity and the potential for policy adjustments to accommodate the diverse student population.
