- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Hanover Town Council meeting, residents’ concerns about traffic and speeding on Malaris Boulevard took center stage, with multiple attendees requesting the implementation of safety measures such as speed humps, speed tables, and improved lighting. In addition to traffic safety issues, the council approved a budget, adopted new ordinances, including plans for infrastructure improvements, and discussed a property being used for sobriety purposes in a residential area.
The traffic safety debate was sparked by the residents’ detailed accounts of dangerous incidents involving speeding vehicles. One resident recounted a near-miss incident involving their son and his friend with a car that ran a red light. Another shared the fear they experienced while walking their dog, due to the high speeds at which vehicles travel on the road. Concerns extended to the difficulties faced by residents in performing everyday tasks like accessing their mailboxes due to the unsafe conditions.
The community members’ call to action included the implementation of speed-reducing measures and better street lighting to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians. They highlighted the risks posed by the current traffic situation and urged the council to take their requests into serious consideration. In response, the council members acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured the residents that their concerns would be thoroughly reviewed.
Further, the public comments brought to light frustrations over a property being used for sobriety purposes within the neighborhood, with residents voicing worries about its commercial nature and the potential impact on the residential area. The conversation underscored the residents’ desire for the maintenance of neighborhood safety and integrity.
Moving beyond the public safety discourse, the council conducted official business, including the approval of a budgetary allocation. The 2024 Municipal current fund budget saw the public hearing and consideration of amendments, followed by adoption. One decision was made to remove $69,500 as an anticipated special item of General Revenue from the budget.
The meeting also saw the approval of five new ordinances, signaling steps toward community development and enhancement. These ordinances included the acquisition and installation of a prefabricated steel building, an amendment to the township’s salary and compensation policies, and the establishment of a digital electrical message board at Central Park.
Additionally, the payment of bills totaling $9,258,186.45 was authorized, and a consent agenda of resolutions was passed. The council demonstrated its support for local community events by approving raffle applications for several organizations, including the Hanover Rotary Duck Race and various civic association fundraisers.
In closing, the meeting resolved with the approval of a retirement letter from a long-standing member of the public works department, William Drake.
