- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Granby Select Board approved a special permit for a large personal use structure on Chick Street, despite initial concerns due to the absence of the applicant at the beginning of the hearing. The proposed structure, a 50 by 60-foot building intended for private use, raised questions among board members regarding its size and specific uses, which were clarified once the applicant arrived.
The meeting began with a degree of uncertainty when the applicant for the special permit was not present. Board members expressed a strong preference for hearing from the applicant directly before making a decision, particularly because of the structure’s significant size and the impact it could have on the area. The possibility of rescheduling was considered, but the situation resolved when the applicant appeared to present their case.
The applicant described the building as a large “toy box” for personal storage and hobbies, intending to house items such as a camper, a classic car, and trucks. The structure would be constructed with a steel frame and walls, covered with rough-sawn pine to provide a traditional barn appearance. It was emphasized that the building would be for personal use only, not for business, a point of particular interest to the board given the building’s substantial footprint.
Board members sought to ensure that the structure would not be used for commercial purposes, leading to a condition being proposed that the building’s use remain strictly personal. Following the clarification and discussion, a motion was put forward and unanimously approved, with the stipulation that no business activities take place within the premises.
Final approval was granted, with the board noting that the proposed building met all the necessary criteria and was appropriately distanced from neighboring properties. The applicant was informed of a 20-day waiting period following the filing and recording of the paperwork before they could proceed with construction.
