- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Haddon Heights Borough Council meeting, the proposal for the establishment of a commission or committee dedicated to seniors’ activities emerged as a primary point of interest. The proposition, put forth by a representative from Interfaith Caregivers, aims to create a structured body to oversee the development and coordination of programs for the senior population within the community. The debate regarding the best approach to formalize the oversight of these activities was at the forefront, with council members considering the differences in scope and authority between a commission and a committee.
The proposal suggested utilizing a larger room in the community center to meet the demands of an increasing participant number. However, concerns about the logistics of the community center’s use, including room setup, were raised. The need for grants and funding to support the proposed activities prompted the council to deliberate on the appropriate structure to ensure resources are available to sustain these programs.
Furthering the council’s focus on community engagement, the budget for community events and programs was also a central topic. A request for an allocation of either $4,000 or $500 was discussed, with council members showing a willingness to support funding for community programs, especially in light of the impacts of COVID-19 on existing events. The cessation of the Stanel Manor program due to construction plans at St. Mary’s was mentioned. Funding possibilities from Civic events and other sources were considered, with the council emphasizing the importance of a review for any funding proposals.
Infrastructure also featured prominently in the discussions, with the Engineering Committee providing an update on the condition of Garden Street. The street’s renovation was designated as a high-priority project, with council members acknowledging the urgency of road improvements, particularly before the start of the new school year.
The municipal budget was another significant item on the agenda, with the council debating the approval of the 2024 budget, which includes a tax rate increase of approximately 3.81%. Factors contributing to the budget included rising costs for EMS services, pension obligations, and library contributions. Despite concerns about the tax hike, council members recognized the essential nature of these expenses, which also encompassed construction projects and the acquisition of police vehicles. The increase in the surplus was mentioned. However, the resolution for the municipal budget was tabled.
In the same vein, a resolution related to AG services was tabled as well, and the council moved to an executive session. The tabling of resolutions and the move to an executive session underscore the council’s careful consideration of issues that have an impact on the community.
