The offshore wind project debate took precedence. Mayor Vince S. of Brigantine, along with other speakers, brought forth issues like misinformation, property devaluation, tax impacts, lack of transparency from windmill companies, and the necessity for accurate information. Emphasized was the potential for negative impacts on the local community, environment, and economy, with specific mention of property values, electricity costs, and preference for local union jobs.

An economic impact study presented by Defend Brigantine Beach was referenced, supporting these concerns with data and research. The ramifications for property values, tourism, and the local economy were repeatedly mentioned, alongside legal actions being taken against the projects, including subpoenas and lawsuits.

Environmental concerns were also prominent, with apprehension regarding the impact on marine life. The sourcing of materials and labor from outside the region, as well as the lack of local job creation, was criticized. Speakers highlighted the surplus of solar power in New Jersey and questioned the rationale behind increasing electricity bills for ratepayers due to the offshore wind projects. Calls were made to the commissioners to join the opposition and take action against the proposed developments.

The meeting proceeded to celebrate the Egg Harbor Township High School Robotics Team’s achievements in the First Tech Challenge as New Jersey Deep South Region Alliance Champions and 10th Place Division finishers at the World Championship. The team’s success was attributed to community, school, and organizational support, and the commissioners commended the young achievers.

Ordinances introduced at the meeting included one from Somers Point to prevent parking in front of a pumping station and another revising bus stop sections in Galloway Township. These passed the first reading smoothly, without public comment. Resolutions concerning a CDC grant for community COVID-19 response, a grant agreement with the South Jersey Transportation Authority, and grants from the New Jersey Department of Human Services and New Jersey Transit were approved.

Professional service agreements discussed covered appraisal services, land planning, inmate discharge planning and re-entry, and fire safety equipment inspections and replacements. A concern was raised by a commissioner regarding a traffic signalization project’s quality, which was reportedly resolved with corrections to all issues.

The commissioners approved competitive contracts and change orders for drainage and highway improvement projects. An interlocal agreement with Ocean County for juvenile detention services and the frustration over the delayed approval for the expansion of Harbor Fields were discussed. The board also recognized May 2024 as Mental Health Awareness Month and urged Spirit Airlines to reconsider relocating their crew base due to economic implications for Atlantic County.

Safety concerns on the bike path were addressed, with overgrown trees and unauthorized brush removal by a tree company prompting discussions on proper authorization and safety improvements, including the potential installation of emergency call stations.

In addition to the offshore wind project discussions, individuals brought up other concerns such as the impact on recreational fishing and tourism, the renaming of a veterans cemetery, and the board’s response to the wind turbine installations. Skepticism about the benefits and financial sustainability of offshore wind energy and the lack of local jobs was noted.
