- Meeting Overview:
The recent Saddle Brook School Board meeting was marked by discussions of environmental sustainability through a plastic recycling initiative and the nurturing of student success via the “Dreams” program. The board also addressed budget concerns, including a tax increase and the allocation of funds for school improvements and staffing needs. Community involvement featured prominently, with discussions on a grant for school safety and public comments calling for the recognition of Muslim holidays in the school calendar.
A standout moment of the meeting was the presentation on the collaborative effort between the National Junior Honor Society and the Metaland Rotary Club to collect plastic for recycling into park benches. This initiative, which is part of a broader plastic recycling movement in East Rutherford and Rutherford, involves collecting plastic from various sources and taking it to a local Kohl’s store for shipping to a recycling company. A representative from the Rotary Club highlighted the importance of this endeavor for environmental sustainability.
The meeting also delved into the “nurtured heart approach,” a component of the district’s participation in the “Dreams” program. This approach aims to maximize student success by building positive connections and nurturing success without energizing negativity. The presenters provided concrete examples of how this technique is applied in classrooms, from celebrating student achievements to setting clear limits and consequences.
Further discussions at the meeting centered on the approach used at Washington School to cultivate inner wealth in children. The emphasis was on building trust and genuine relationships, with an acknowledgment of a first-grade teacher who has notably created a strong connection with her students. The board discussed the implementation of monthly and weekly social-emotional lessons to further promote inner wealth building.
Budgetary concerns were a significant topic, with the approved budget including allocations for salaries, benefits, concrete repairs, HVAC repairs, and band uniforms. The budget also accounts for new staffing positions, such as special education teachers and a speech language pathologist, in response to an increasing need for individualized education plans. The impact on taxpayers was addressed, with a projected tax increase of $233 for the average assessed house.
The Business Administrator reported on upcoming projects, including renovations at Coolidge School, a bathroom project at the middle school/high school, and roof replacements noted in the referendum. Efforts to secure a grant for school safety improvements, such as door access controls and AI for cameras, were also shared. During the board action items segment, motions were made and approved in areas of education and curriculum, budget and finance, facilities and operations, and policy. Staff appointments and substitutes were approved in the Personnel report.
Events and achievements were also acknowledged, including the announcement of the American Division athletic director of the Year and a student’s accomplishments in softball. The Superintendent mentioned an upcoming meeting of the superintendent student advisory council, which provides high school students with an opportunity to give input on school improvements.
The meeting concluded with public comments, where several community members advocated for the recognition of Muslim holidays in the school calendar, specifically requesting that Eid be observed as a holiday for Muslim students. They also suggested integrating American Muslim Heritage Month into the curriculum, with personal anecdotes and examples from other towns and schools that recognize Muslim holidays. The board took note of these requests and assured further discussion on the matter.
