- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Nashoba Regional School Committee focused on the development of a more engaging and relevant science curriculum for grades 9-12 and a new high school academic schedule aimed at better supporting students’ social-emotional learning and academic success. The committee also discussed the implementation of a flexible block schedule, potential changes to the high school handbook, and the evaluation process for the superintendent’s performance.
The Nashoba Regional School Committee convened to address several key educational initiatives, with the enhancement of the science curriculum and the restructuring of the high school schedule standing out as primary focal points. The committee’s comprehensive review aimed to refine instructional practices in science education, align them with real-world applications and promote deeper learning experiences. Linda Pier, representing the science department, highlighted the feedback from students and families, which underscored a shared desire for hands-on learning and a wider variety of science electives. The committee deliberated on how to incorporate this feedback into action, contemplating new instructional materials, curriculum options, and elective offerings, as well as improving communication about course sequencing.
Furthermore, the committee discussed the development of a new high school academic schedule, which is designed to align with the school’s vision and address feedback from the school community. The working group, which includes representatives from various departments, has been exploring alternative scheduling models through surveys and site visits. One such model is the “Flex block” system, which will undergo a 3-week pilot in October to solicit input from students and staff. This pilot aims to provide opportunities for extra help, interventions, collaboration, and non-academic activities such as internships. The committee considered the implications of reducing or eliminating traditional study halls and implementing a directed study program as an alternative. There was also debate about the potential impact on students’ stress levels and access to teachers.
In addition to the discussions on curriculum and scheduling, the committee touched on modifications to the high school handbook. Proposed changes include tightening the criteria for excused absences and aligning with state regulations, as well as updating the eligibility section to match Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) wording. The committee sought to clarify the implications of these changes for parents and students.
The superintendent’s final evaluation presentation was another significant item on the agenda. The superintendent outlined the progress made in key areas such as district improvement goals, teaching and learning standards, community connections, leadership, social-emotional structures, and student learning goals. The superintendent’s report included initiatives on communication system improvements, curricular mapping, leadership development, equity audits, and financial transparency. The presentation served as an opportunity for the committee to review the district’s achievements and identify areas for ongoing improvement.
Lastly, the committee acknowledged the retirement of two members, Karen Devine and Michael Horesh, who were recognized for their contributions to the committee.
