- Meeting Overview:
The Kenilworth School Board has taken steps in the search for a new superintendent while also showcasing commitment to innovative educational projects and addressing key operational matters. The highlight of the recent school board meeting was the progress reported in the search for a new superintendent, following the announcement of the current superintendent’s impending resignation. Integral to the search process, survey results from the community and the review of 43 applications have culminated in 14 candidates being selected for initial interviews. The board is on track to approve the final candidate by the June 19th meeting.
In tandem with the superintendent search, the board discussed other matters, including the creation of two stipend positions to address substitute teacher billing rates and outreach, and a staffing retention plan to equalize compensation for IT technicians and custodians. Additionally, the board reviewed 16 resolutions, touching on subjects such as the superintendent’s resignation, employment for the upcoming school year, and an executive background check related to the superintendent search.
The meeting also featured innovative educational projects proposed by staff. Among them was “Eduventures,” a podcast designed to foster community engagement and disseminate information about school initiatives. Another project aimed to increase community engagement through language learning, while a third focused on organizing a disability awareness day for students. Each initiative received positive feedback and discussion centered around the potential to engage more teachers in similar future projects.
The superintendent expressed gratitude to the community, reflecting on the challenges and achievements over his five-year tenure. He highlighted the introduction of new programs, mental health, and behavioral supports for students, and thanked teachers and the board for their dedication and support. The finance committee provided an update on the budget and the impact of legislation, while negotiations and personnel matters were reserved for closed sessions.
The Teacher Leadership Academy was featured, emphasizing its goal to build leadership skills in teachers. The academy has started with about 15 teacher members, focusing on community building and planning for future passion projects without preparing them for administrative roles. The summer workshop themes and the academy’s potential impact on the district’s culture were discussed in detail.
Furthermore, the board addressed two cases of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB), which sparked some debate and confusion among members. The meeting also briefly touched on a possession charge leading to discussions among the board. The HIB report was set to be voted on later in the meeting.
During public comments, a representative advocated for including the Kenilworth Association in the superintendent search process to ensure teacher input is considered in decision-making. The board closed the meeting with an executive session to further discuss the superintendent search and negotiations.
