- Meeting Overview:
The Methuen School Committee’s recent meeting unfolded with a series of discussions, amongst which the approval of an imaginative and inclusive playground initiative at Tenny Grammar School, known as the Cultural Council Tenny Grammar School Whimsical Courtyard Oasis, took center stage. This project, aimed at transforming school courtyards into vibrant, interactive spaces, is designed to foster creativity, inclusivity, and physical activity among students, engaging them in educational play. The proposal has already secured a grant through the Methuen Cultural Council and carries the potential for additional sponsorships and involvement by high school and middle school students in a significant public art project.
The meeting also acknowledged several educators for their contributions. Jason Smith, a science teacher at Methuen High School, received the Teacher of the Year award for his 25-year tenure marked by dedication to teaching and coaching. Other educators recognized for their achievements included Christina Conlin from the Marsh School, Laura Deaso from Tenny Grammar School, and Karen KRW from the Donald P. Timony Grammar School, each celebrated for their exceptional leadership and dedication to student learning and social-emotional development.
Public participation during the meeting brought forward concerns from the community. Speakers highlighted the need for access to well-equipped school libraries, with emphasis on their impact on student achievement and literacy rates. Additionally, the underfunding of schools was criticized for its adverse effects on the quality of education and staff retention, with an urgent call for the school committee to advocate for increased funding for the district.
Classroom behavioral disruptions were another issue raised, with concerns about the growing class sizes and the potential loss of support staff. The committee’s discussion further delved into the complexities of residency checks, maintenance tasks, and school facilities’ safety, specifically addressing the need for smoke detectors in school bathrooms.
The committee also grappled with the school budget, debating the reconciliation of a $700,000 discrepancy and discussing the reallocation of funds for custodial services, the operating budget, and the circuit breaker fund. The impact of vacancies and unfilled positions on the budget was examined, with the aspiration of reinstating some laid-off staff. The discussions extended to class sizes, the human impact of budget decisions, and the fairness of the current funding structure.
Transportation for alternative disciplinary measures, such as Saturday detention and after-school programs, was discussed, albeit with concerns about the lack of budget allocation for these services. The committee unanimously approved a proposal to transfer funds into contractual services and replenish the circuit breaker account.
Finally, the meeting covered the approval of a contract for the Tenny Grammar School electrical updates project, with particular attention paid to compliance with permit requirements. A project for the Methuen High School walkway and parking improvements was awarded, with the project expected to begin in June and continue through the summer, emphasizing the importance of ADA compliance.
