Pequannock Adopts 2024 Budget, Plans for Turf Fields Spark Interest
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent session, Pequannock Town Council adopted the 2024 Municipal budget which includes plans for new artificial turf fields and utilizes surplus funds from the library’s return balance. The meeting, which covered various topics including capital improvements, salary ordinances, and community events, saw the council navigate through public comments, discussions, and resolutions.
The Township’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) clarified that surplus from the interest on deposits would be saved for future budgets and that the surplus from the library’s 2023 fund balance would support the 2024 budget. The Public Works director’s wish list for 2024 also included the proposed turf fields, highlighting the council’s focus on infrastructure and recreational improvements.
The council’s decision to adopt the budget was followed by the introduction and subsequent adoption of several ordinances. These included a new policy for reimbursing residents for mailboxes damaged by Township vehicles and the Gen cap ordinance, which likely pertains to general capital funding. Additionally, the council addressed the water utility capital budget and passed two salary ordinances—one for non-represented employees and another in line with the PBA SOA agreement. The CFO provided explanations for each ordinance.
During the ordinance introductions, one council member notably abstained from voting on the ordinance fixing the salaries and compensation of the paid police officers. The meeting also saw some debate during the resolutions roll call, with a council member expressing uncertainty on how to cast their vote.
Council reports and announcements were a forum for members to update the public on committee meetings, community events, and personal recognitions. Appreciation was expressed for various community activities, including the Little League parade, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a local singer’s performance. Additionally, a brief update was shared regarding the progress of the library roof repair, maintaining the council’s focus on local infrastructure and community projects.
Highlighting environmental and recreational engagement, the council discussed the Environmental Commission’s upcoming bioblitz event, which aims to involve residents in bird-watching and nature sessions. The council also recognized the success of the Little League opening day, congratulated a new Eagle Scout, and mentioned upcoming music events such as a spring concert and a performance at the New York Yankees Stadium.
In the public comments section, concerns were raised about rainwater management and flooding, topics of increasing importance in the wake of heavier rainfalls and climate change. Residents also voiced issues regarding the upkeep of the library’s parking lot. The council addressed these by pointing to ongoing projects aimed at managing rainwater and separating stormwater from sanitary systems.
