- Meeting Overview:
The latest meeting of the Somers Point City Council was marked by the honoring of retiring city clerk Lucy Samson for her years of service and the introduction of several initiatives including a new walking group to promote community health. The council also tackled operational matters such as the appointment of a new city clerk, discussions about infrastructure improvements, and approved resolutions aimed at promoting clean work sites and addressing surplus property issues.
Lucy Samson’s retirement as city clerk was a focal point, with the council presenting her a proclamation recognizing her contributions to the city. Samson’s tenure included roles as Deputy City Clerk and Insurance Fund Commissioner, as well as her volunteer work with the Somers Point Veterans Advisory Board. Her involvement with municipal clerks associations and teaching at Rutgers University were also commended. In response, Samson expressed gratitude, acknowledging the support of her colleagues and family. Shelby Heath was appointed as the new City Clerk, with the council expressing confidence in Heath’s abilities to uphold the high standards set by her predecessor.
The council’s agenda moved forward with the discussion of adding bus shelters in line with the Safe Streets grant, a project aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and comfort. Updates from the school board and arts commission were provided, reflecting ongoing developments in education and culture within the city.
A newly introduced ordinance amending residential parking permits was passed. However, other resolutions saw a delay in their discussion as the council opted to table these for the next meeting.
The public comment session brought forward a resident’s proposal for a homeless shelter at the CH Episcopal Church. Although the comment was initially out of turn, directed towards the residential parking permits ordinance, the council acknowledged the importance of the proposal.
Resolutions adopted during the meeting included the appointment of a public agency compliance officer and a certifying agent. The council and mayor underscored the importance of clean and safe work sites, passing a resolution to maintain high environmental standards, particularly concerning microplastics control. The council also addressed operational logistics, authorizing the termination of an agreement and the sale of surplus property, as well as discussing the storage of surplus police vehicles.
A significant operational decision was the approval to purchase an air conditioner condenser for the Somers Point Police Department. Executive sessions were authorized to discuss the leasing of the New York Avenue School and contractual negotiations for ambulance services.
The council introduced “We Walk Somers Point,” a new initiative designed to foster health and wellness within the community. This initiative aims to encourage residents to engage in physical activity and was received positively by the council members who highlighted its potential benefits for mental and physical health. Furthermore, the council welcomed Bryce Edmonds as a new volunteer to the New Jersey firefighters.
During the public comment period, a resident raised concerns regarding the oaths of office for the prosecutor, city solicitor, and city clerk, questioning their compliance with New Jersey statutes and the Constitution. This prompted the council to address the issue, reflecting its responsiveness to citizen inquiries and adherence to legal standards.
The council concluded the meeting by approving the payment of bills and announcing a recess before moving into an executive session, thus ensuring the orderly and transparent management of city finances.
