- Meeting Overview:
The Acushnet Board of Selectmen addressed several issues at their recent meeting, including the approval of a pilot program allowing Fairhaven residents to golf at Acushnet Country Club rates, the paving of roads affected by EverSource trenching, the examination of the fiscal year 2025 budget and warrant, and personnel changes, including the resignation of the veteran service officer and the appointment of an interim successor.
The most noteworthy development from the meeting was the introduction of a pilot program that permits residents of neighboring Fairhaven to enjoy golfing at the Acushnet Country Club at the same rates offered to Acushnet residents. The board decided to monitor the program’s progress throughout the season, with plans to reassess its success at the end of the term. This initiative represents a fresh approach to regional recreational collaboration and is expected to be closely observed for its impact on the local community and the golf club.
In parallel with the new golfing arrangement, the board addressed infrastructure needs within the town. There was a motion to award the bid for paving work on roads that have been impacted by EverSource’s trenching activities for gas mains. Furthermore, the board discussed funding for additional roads affected by these operations and decided to send communications to residents in the affected areas to provide updates on the paving status.
Amid these developments, the board engaged in a critical examination of the fiscal year 2025 budget and warrant. The conversation involved a detailed review of various budget items, adjustments to revenue lines, and the implications on departmental budgets. The board addressed the measures taken to balance the budget, while also acknowledging the challenges and expressing concerns about the sustainability of current financial strategies. With the budget marginally balanced, with less than a $250 difference between revenue figures and expenditures, the board approved the budget part of the warrant and humorously contemplated using the surplus for a community cookout.
The meeting also featured discussions on numerous warrant articles, some of which were passed over due to deficits or to cover bills from previous fiscal years. The board considered recurring articles, such as funding for cable access, state and federal grant applications, and allowing various boards to determine compensation and perform necessary work. Additionally, they reviewed funding articles for the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Library Board of Trustees among other programs and funds. Furthermore, they deliberated on a stormwater bylaw and an appointment to the Joint Transportation Plan Group.
Personnel matters were another focal point, with the board addressing the resignation of Ron Kier, the veteran service officer who served the town for 15 years. Brad Fish was appointed as the interim veteran service officer to ensure uninterrupted support for the town’s veterans. Moreover, the board held an executive session to discuss the United Steel Workers Union contract and appointed a new tree warden following a recent vacancy.
In a reorganization of the board, Bob Hinley was appointed as the new chairman. The board concluded with announcements of upcoming events and initiatives, including the planting of a tree in memory of the former tree warden, Mr. Fet.
The meeting also touched upon the practice of buying out or carrying over vacation time for various town employees and an agreement with Fairhaven regarding beach passes.
