- Meeting Overview:
In an effort to address infrastructure needs, the Delran Town Council has introduced a bond ordinance authorizing repair and replacement of sewer mains, with an appropriation of $3.95 million. The ordinance, which aims to prevent further issues like the major collapse experienced earlier in the year, has been fast-tracked to mitigate potential problems on Route 130, which has seen multiple issues in the past two years.
The council meeting also included the introduction of two other bond ordinances. The first, totaling $395,000, is set to fund the purchase of a dump truck and other equipment to enhance brush collection operations. The second, appropriating $800,000, is designated for various capital improvements within the township.
In addition to the bond ordinances, the council reviewed a new state-mandated stormwater ordinance. This ordinance incorporates new rules adopted by the state, taking into account increased rainfall intensities as a factor of climate change. Municipalities are required to adopt these new rules but are not allowed to make them more lax. The ordinance aims to control stormwater management calculations for developers and homeowners until the year 2100.
Another topic addressed was the 2024 sewer claims, with a memo provided summarizing the issues and recommendations made. One claim was received a day late, but due to clear evidence of an issue, it was included in the recommendations for resolution.
The council also discussed the upcoming capital budget, which includes the purchase of capital equipment to improve township operations. Furthermore, the council acknowledged the need for elected officials’ training.
The meeting covered updates on several infrastructure projects, including street irrigation, road programs, and a pipe bursting project on Route 130. The council was also informed about the design phase for the replacement of influent pumps at the sewer plant, a componet of the town’s infrastructure.
Council members took time to recognize community events and initiatives, such as the planting of a memorial tree in honor of Jesse Williams and the attendance of the Riverside Township Memorial Day Parade. Additionally, the planning for the upcoming Flags for Heroes event was mentioned.
