- Meeting Overview:
The Farmingdale School District recently held an event honoring outstanding individuals whose achievements and contributions have left a lasting impact on the community and serve as an inspiration for students. The annual Wall of Fame induction ceremony was a focal point of a recent school board meeting, where three distinguished honorees were recognized: Dr. John Balchuck, Mr. Bob Waganda, and Mr. Greg Morowski.
The Wall of Fame, established in 1998, is dedicated to celebrating role models from a range of professions. Student journalists from the school newspaper, The Paper Line, played an important role in the ceremony by introducing the honorees and documenting their accomplishments. The selection committee, the Board of Education members, central office administration, and the FHS main office staff were all acknowledged for their support of the event.
Dr. John Balchuck, the first honoree, was lauded for his contributions as an educator and nurse, particularly for initiating a hospital-based nursing assistant program during the pandemic. Mr. James Capano, a friend of Dr. Balchuck, spoke highly of his long-standing friendship and illustrious career in the nursing field. Dr. Balchuck shared his gratitude for the recognition and reflected on his life’s journey, noting the impact of his family and educators on his career choices. He stressed the significance of work ethic and determination in achieving success.
Another inductee, Mr. Bob Waganda, was recognized for his remarkable career in wrestling, education, and hot air ballooning, along with his charitable work, including contributions to the Make A Wish Foundation. A journalist introduced Waganda, and a guest speaker praised his life’s work and shared intimate details about his contributions to ballooning events. Waganda, during his speech, offered condolences for recent tragedies and extended his gratitude for the honor, providing personal reflections and advice for future students.
Greg Morowski’s induction centered on his substantial influence on Farmingdale High School’s music program. As a student and later as a music educator, Morowski’s love for music and his dedication to the school community were celebrated. A family member shared anecdotes about his musical journey and his significant role as the Fine Arts and Music director, both in the Island Trees School District and upon his return to Farmingdale. Morowski’s acceptance speech was filled with gratitude, acknowledging the impact of the music department during his tenure as a student and the support of his colleagues.
Additional heartwarming moments included a tribute to two influential music teachers from Farmingdale High School by a speaker, who shared personal experiences and expressed appreciation for the retiring director of Fine Arts. The speaker also thanked the superintendent and staff for their support during a challenging year and recognized their family’s role in their success. A brass quintet performed in honor of the speaker’s work in the Fine and Performing Arts Department.
The event organizers and student journalists received thanks for their contributions to the ceremony. A final note from the meeting highlighted the intention to share the stories and messages of the inductees with the students. The meeting concluded with an expression of gratitude to the community for their belief in the Wall of Fame and an invitation to enjoy refreshments.
