- Meeting Overview:
The Reading Recreation Committee’s latest meeting was a hub of discussions on various proposals, including the naming of community facilities, the introduction of a formal naming process, potential public-private partnerships, and the expansion of recreational spaces. The committee tackled the commemoration of community contributors through facility dedications, addressed the swell of interest in pickleball, and outlined plans for the development of multi-use recreational areas, all while keeping an eye on the ongoing fundraising efforts and programming updates.
At the forefront of the meeting, the committee engaged in a discussion regarding the dedication of parts of the Birch Meadow area. Ken Heric put forward a proposal to honor Dr. James for his community contributions, prompting considerations for a dedicated component of the complex. In parallel, the dedication of a pathway to Jamie Mullen, a revered former conservation member, was met with unanimous support. The committee discussed the procedural steps for the naming, which would include a vote by the committee, followed by reviews by the Conservation Commission and the select board.
The conversation on dedications sparked a broader discussion about the need for a formal process for naming parks and pathways. This led to a broader discussion about the utilization of land, with the SWEP recommendations to the select board laying the groundwork for potential pickleball fields, parking solutions, and other recreational facilities.
Pickleball, a sport gaining traction within the community, was a topic of particular interest. The committee noted the high usage of the pickleball court at Memorial Park, which raised concerns about parking and noise. The committee’s response included the review of site locations for new pickleball fields to accommodate the growing demand. Moreover, the success of open play pickleball sessions was acknowledged, and the possibility of adding additional sessions on Sunday afternoons was suggested.
Public-private partnerships were deliberated with caution, emphasizing the town’s control and priority, especially concerning a senior center project. The multi-purpose field concept was evaluated, with the committee noting that the fields under consideration would not be full-size but suitable for sports like soccer. The Birch Meadow master plan was revisited, focusing on field reconfiguration and the inclusion of turf and multi-purpose fields. The dimensions and potential uses of proposed fields were debated thoroughly.
Fundraising efforts were reported successful, with approximately $6,000 raised at a recent event. The Recreation and Admin Program Coordinator updated on spring programs and preparations for summer programs, with new basketball clinics and college consulting presentations being considered. The committee also looked to expand inclusion opportunities and inquired about the YMCA’s use of allocated funds.
Updates on the Meadow at Birch Meadow project were provided, including progress on wild grass planting and maintenance needs. Upcoming community events, such as Town Day, and the scheduling of fireworks for June 15th were discussed. Infrastructure improvements were on the agenda, with plans to install AEDs at Coolidge Middle School, flagpoles at a park, and replace basketball hoops at Sturges Park. The renovation of a playground, the status of batting cages at Simon’s Way, and the committee’s involvement in Friends and Family Day were also highlighted.
