- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the New Milford Borough Council, several decisions were made concerning public safety, historical preservation, and community collaboration. The council issued a proclamation for National Gun Violence Awareness Day, appointed members to various committees, and adopted ordinances aimed at improving local infrastructure and services. Additionally, the meeting addressed community events and shared services with neighboring municipalities.
A prominent point of discussion was the proclamation for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The council encouraged citizens to demonstrate their commitment to reducing gun violence by wearing orange on June 7, 2024.
The council also took action to strengthen local services, appointing Robert Matuli to Fire Company Number One, Tom Derrer to the Planning Board Alternate 2, and Janet Gry and Eileen Dear to the Board of Health. These appointments are part of the council’s ongoing effort to ensure that community services are overseen by capable and dedicated individuals.
Several ordinances were discussed and adopted to address various municipal needs. Among them, Ordinance 2024 col 09 authorized the improvement of Boulevard, with funds appropriated for the project to enhance the thoroughfare. Ordinance 2024 col 10 and Ordinance 2024 col 11 revised fees for recreational programs and updated the fire department’s ordinance to align with its rules and regulations, respectively.
A new ordinance, 2024 col 17, was introduced to establish a position of special law enforcement officer Class 2.
The council also discussed a shared services request from the neighboring town of Westwood for grant administration related to flood mitigation. The collaborative effort between the two municipalities was seen as a positive step towards addressing the common challenge of flood mitigation, with the council noting Westwood’s proactive involvement with the flood advisory committee.
Community engagement was another focal point of the meeting, with updates on several events, including the New Milford Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony, a variety of cultural and mental health awareness activities, and the upcoming National Night Out. The postponement of the joint bid with Rivage for solid waste collection was noted, and primary election details were provided, including polling locations.
The potential collaboration between the closed Tenafly Library and the New Milford Library was brought up.
In closing, the council entered a closed session and proceeded with the approval of several resolutions. Council members voiced their appreciation for the work done by various committees, departments, and community organizations in planning and facilitating these events and initiatives.
