- Meeting Overview:
The North Miami Commission for Women has made strides toward enhancing civic involvement and supporting female entrepreneurs by approving a partnership with the League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County and discussing funding for the Nomi Business Master Class initiative. The recent meeting highlighted significant plans for the Commission’s forthcoming events and operational improvements, including the recommendation to appoint an executive director to bolster the Commission’s and Youth Council’s effectiveness.
The partnership with the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan organization, will involve hosting “Cocktails and Conversations,” a series of quarterly networking events aimed at increasing civic participation and representation in North Miami. This initiative was met with unanimous support, signaling the Commission’s dedication to fostering community connections and empowerment.
Another focal point of the meeting was the Nomi Business Master Class, designed to support 50 female startups. To achieve the $25,000 funding goal for the initiative, members discussed strategies such as engaging with the North Miami Chamber of Commerce and preparing sponsorship letters. The initiative’s financial management prompted a conversation about potentially designating a treasurer for the Commission for Women. Although the city’s chief of staff clarified the procedure for receiving and allocating donations, the decision to appoint a treasurer was deferred to the next meeting for further clarification.
In addition to these initiatives, the Commission deliberated on the organization of the second annual Women’s Health and Wellness Conference. Ultimately, a budget of $2575 was approved, encompassing various event elements, including awards.
The Commission also explored operational enhancements, such as establishing social media accounts to improve outreach and communication. The need for a consistent and professional representation was addressed through discussions on professional headshots, apparel, and branding elements like business cards and letterheads. The need for a more inviting and regularly updated commission web page was also a topic of conversation.
Furthermore, the meeting touched upon building relations with various organizations, including women-owned businesses and women’s commissions in surrounding areas. Members talked about sending letters to establish these connections and recognized the importance of acknowledging women in public service.
The recommendation to propose an executive director for the board and the Youth Council sparked debate among the members. While some voiced support for the idea, others raised concerns about the financial implications and the necessity of prioritizing women’s needs in the community. Despite the divided opinions, the motion passed with a vote of 4-2.
These included deliberations on event design, the arrangement of venues, and the promotion of events through various channels.
