- Meeting Overview:
Littleton’s Board of Selectmen meeting highlighted two major initiatives: the implementation of measures to improve teen driving safety during the “100 deadliest days of summer” and the introduction of vocational training programs in fields like plumbing and electrical work.
Addressing the significant concern of teenage driving related fatalities, the Board discussed strategies to reduce accidents during the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day, known for its high rate of teen driving incidents. The Board emphasized the role parents and guardians play in enforcing driving rules and setting examples for teen drivers. In 2022, Massachusetts saw the highest number of teenage fatalities since 2008, with 49 drivers aged 16 to 19 killed in motor vehicle accidents. The Board underscored the importance of adhering to Junior operator restrictions, including limiting the number of passengers for new drivers, setting curfews to prevent late-night driving, and banning all phone use, including hands-free devices, for drivers under 18.
In vocational training, the Board presented an overview of the new programs aimed at equipping individuals with the necessary skills and certifications for plumbing and electrical careers. These programs, which are free for students, offer hands-on experience and cover various topics, from basic theory to the use of the latest tools and equipment in the respective trades. Participants can expect to receive certifications such as OSHA 10 construction, Hot work, Rams set powder actuated tool, and a certificate of completion of the 200-hour electrical course. The programs are designed to address the shortage of skilled labor in these trades and help students kickstart rewarding careers.
Furthermore, the Littleton Rotary Club announced its first annual summer kickoff Carnival, a charity event to support Littleton’s TREAD program, which assists the needy, elderly, and disabled with property tax reductions. The event, featuring rides, games, food, and attractions, will also include a beer garden and various entertainment acts scheduled throughout the duration of the carnival.
