Furthering the waste management discussion, the Board deliberated on the proper disposal of recyclables and trash, expressing the need to standardize the sizes of boxes for recycling and the placement of trash barrels. With the changing climate potentially increasing the prevalence of mosquito and tick populations, the Board shared concerns about the rise in heat-related illnesses and the emergence of new vector-borne diseases within the region.

The town health nurse reported on various activities, including the organization of a health fair, blood pressure clinics, and a walk-in club. Emphasizing the importance of community outreach, the nurse expressed satisfaction with the progress made in building relationships with community members. Moreover, the nurse shared her experiences from a recent conference, where she gained insights into initiating a project for outreach to mothers and babies, and discussed her role in the upcoming Camp season.

The Board also recognized the success of recent community events, including the Harmony Fest, and discussed the potential for arranging a training session on choke saving in the near future. Additionally, the approval of a foot care practitioner from Long Meadow to provide services at the senior center was discussed.

Updates on the town’s Earth Day involvement, Fix-it Clinics, and the trash and recycling calendar were provided. Clarification was given that the trash and recycling contract was not ending soon, and the Board touched upon the increase in permits for temporary festivals. The successful food safety manager certification class, which saw attendance from faith-based organization representatives, was another topic of discussion.
