- Meeting Overview:
The Camden School Board has taken steps towards the redevelopment of East Side High School, with plans for a new state-of-the-art facility, a temporary relocation during construction, and a determined focus on community involvement. The future of East Side High School was the focal point of the meeting, as attendees were presented with comprehensive plans for its construction and the temporary transition space for students and staff.
The board vice president, N’Namdee Nelson, expressed excitement about the future of East Side High School, emphasizing the commitment to academic excellence and physical well-being in the new facility. Superintendent Katrina T. McCombs detailed the construction plans and the phased approach to the development. The project’s timeline was outlined, with the district set to vacate the current building in the summer of 2024, demolition to begin in February 2024, and the completion of the new building expected by September 2029.
The selection of D Architects for the East Side High School development project was announced, a firm known for designing the Canon campus. The new facility is anticipated to enhance academic and extracurricular opportunities for students, integrating advanced resources to foster an optimal educational environment. The community’s role was emphasized, with invitations extended for individuals to join committees to contribute to the vision for the new facility.
Addressing the interim period, the board discussed the temporary relocation of East Side High School staff and students to the framework school on mile Street in Camden, New Jersey. This strategic move, in partnership with the Camden County Improvement Authority, aims to minimize disruption by renovating a district-owned property instead of leasing an external facility. Renovations at the framework school, including repairs and updates to the interiors, are underway to prepare for the September 2024 transition.
The space planning for the framework school was presented, with specific allocations for various functions across the floors. Special education students from East Side High will be moved to the Camden High campus, while the Sore Academy will be relocated during the temporary phase.
Continuity for athletics and extracurricular activities was assured, with plans in place to avoid interruptions and maintain accessibility for athletic teams. Additionally, summer school and credit recovery programs will continue at alternative locations during the construction period.
An alumnus of East Side High School also spoke. The council president, also an alumnus, encouraged community participation in the decision-making process through committee involvement.
