- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Jackson Township Council meeting, focus was placed on the proposed enhancements to Wood Lane Park, including the installation of new playground equipment and safety features. The discussion around the park’s upgrades formed the centerpiece of the meeting, with detailed presentations and council inquiries into the practicality, durability, and inclusivity of the playground design.
The meeting commenced with updates on the accessibility of planning board documents on the Township website. However, the main event was the introduction of the Wood Lane Park project by a representative from Ben Schaefer Recreation. The proposed enhancements to the park included modern playground equipment, a shade canopy, swing sets, sensory pieces for children with disabilities, benches, playground signage, and seating areas.
The representative from Ben Schaefer Recreation, Greg Poell, assured the council that durable materials were selected for the playground and that warranties would back the equipment. Poell also promised to provide renderings for the color schemes and involve the council in the color selection process to ensure suitability and address their preference for brighter colors that accommodate children with disabilities.
In the course of their dialogue with Poell, council members expressed a key interest in the safety and longevity of the playground equipment. They inquired about the installation timelines and cost differentials between wood fiber and poured rubber surfacing options, as well as the functionality and installation of the shade canopy and seating areas. The discussion extended to canopy options and recommended age group signage for the playgrounds. Moreover, the potential noise impact of musical instruments in the playground was debated.
The need for long-term traffic solutions was emphasized, including collaboration with planning and zoning board engineers. A pending Capital ordinance and the 2024 Road Improvement program were also deliberated, with an added plan to include striping at county intersections. Furthermore, the council clarified a parking restrictions ordinance aimed at ensuring safe bus access for children.
Additionally, the council mentioned ongoing upgrades and improvements to County Parks and expressed support for the future enhancements at Wood Lane Park. There was a call to action for residents to make the most of the town’s recreational areas and an acknowledgment of the upcoming holidays. In a commendation of the town’s operational efficiency, the Public Works department was praised for promptly replacing a faded stop sign.
Other topics at the meeting included the Jackson Summer Concert Series, initiated by the Recreation Department, and the township economic advisory committee’s role in advising on future economic growth. The council approved the executive session meeting minutes and deliberated on ordinances related to street designations and extra duty assignments within the Department of Public Safety.
During the public comments segment, residents voiced concerns regarding a range of issues from the previous town council meeting’s verbiage, missing sidewalks, and control of the town’s Facebook page, to an incident at the police department. A resident mentioned disseminating a video and audio of a previous meeting on YouTube. In response, the public safety director addressed some of the concerns raised.
