Deerra Kennedy was lauded for her direct communication style and her profound impact as a master teacher in the field of special education.

In addition to the retirement celebrations, the board welcomed new staff members to the Summit Public Schools team, expressing excitement for the fresh perspectives and skills they would bring to the district.

The updates on construction and curriculum developments were significant, as the board detailed progress on school projects and plans. The ongoing patience of staff and families during the construction process was acknowledged, noting the aim to provide modern and dynamic educational environments for students.

The superintendent shared celebrations and achievements within the district, including a successful campaign by the Washington School fifth grade Spirit Squad and recognitions of student accomplishments in the arts and athletics. Additionally, a reunification exercise conducted with local agencies was addressed.

In the area of school operations, the Education Committee’s discussions were noteworthy, covering topics such as high school rankings, the COVID-19 safe return plan, and curriculum additions like a proposed sixth-grade humanities class. The Operations Committee reported on project bids, including a recommendation to accept a bid for asbestos removal and to reject the Jefferson playground bid due to budget concerns. The committee also discussed the need for a part-time role in the athletics department.

The Finance Committee brought up the receipt of a rebate aimed at transitioning from gas-powered to electric school buses.
