- Meeting Overview:
In a recent New Milford School Board meeting, the community gathered to celebrate the achievements of Berkeley Street School fifth graders, who were recognized for their academic accomplishments, participation in school programs, and the successful completion of their elementary education. The promotion of the Class of 2024 was a focal point of the meeting, featuring various awards and recognitions.
During the meeting, a speech by the vice principal of Berkeley Street School, Paula Castro, highlighted the students’ journey and encouraged them to look forward to the new challenges of middle school. The acting Superintendent Warren Oda also addressed the students, focusing on the new opportunities that awaited them in their next phase of education. The meeting then proceeded to celebrate various aspects of student involvement and achievement throughout the elementary school years.
Students who showed exceptional skill and dedication in the STEM field were honored with Reach certificates. The recognition was part of a broader acknowledgment of student participation in extracurricular activities, such as orchestra, band, and choir, with specific students being recognized for their contributions to these programs. Additionally, the fifth-grade student council members were applauded for their leadership and responsibility.
The Student Council presentation was a notable event, where students outlined several initiatives aimed at fostering positive change within the school environment. Among these were a recycling program, a Thanksgiving gratitude table, and a beautification project funded by a grant.
The Physical Education department honored two students who had demonstrated outstanding achievement in physical education. Furthermore, the Spirit Club coordinators recognized the fifth graders who participated and helped organize activities throughout the year.
The role of the fifth graders in school safety was also commended, with specific students being recognized for their leadership in the Safety Patrol, where they ensured the well-being of younger students before and after school. This act of recognition underscored the value placed on student leadership and the cultivation of a safe school environment.
In an expression of the community’s support for student development, the Junior Women’s Club of River Edge awarded a Most Improved Student award, celebrating a student’s significant growth over their time at the school. Additionally, the Principal Awards were given to students who not only excelled academically but also displayed exemplary character.
