- Meeting Overview:
The Pequannock Town Council convened to discuss a myriad of community-focused initiatives, with the successful Pride Fest and mental health awareness at the forefront. The meeting also delved into infrastructure improvements, including a Municipal Aid Grant application for road safety and a special aid application for guardrails near the high school. Additionally, updates on local events, economic development, and community services such as the First Aid Squad were addressed.
Pride Fest, a celebration of inclusivity and kindness, was a focal point during the council meeting, with volunteers and council members acknowledging its success. Randy Shamber from Propel reported on the event’s accomplishments, including scholarships awarded to students. Mary K. Schurman and Paul Mailer, president of Propel Panick, highlighted the fest’s welcoming atmosphere and the introduction of a QR code for mental health services, expressing gratitude for the township’s support.
Infrastructure enhancements were another significant topic, with the council examining the proposed Municipal Aid Grant application. The grant aims to improve road safety by addressing intersection narrowing and guide rail installations. The discussion covered the implications of DOT funding and adherence to standards, as well as the necessity of input from the Traffic Division on proposed improvements, particularly around the high school area.
The council also reviewed the Baxter Court hold harmless agreement and the local Recreation Improvement Grant for 2024, which would fund lighting controls at Washington Park. Additionally, a change order for a sanitary sewer project was approved, resulting in a net deduction of funds and an extended completion date. Resolutions regarding custodianship changes, vehicle purchases, interlocal agreements for landscape services, and the renewal of Alcoholic Beverage Control licenses were also passed.
Council members discussed local community services and events, such as support for Camp Quality USA, a camp for children with cancer, and the First Aid Squad’s volunteer work. Upcoming events including October Fest and a food truck festival were mentioned, alongside concerns raised by residents about parking regulations and activities for teens.
Economic development efforts were highlighted by the discussion of a new business checklist and a survey for business owners. Council members acknowledged the Economic Development Committee’s ongoing work to foster business growth, as well as the veterans’ alumni groundbreaking ceremony at the high school and plans for the old Friendlies building.
Challenges faced by the Shade Tree Committee in procuring trees for a grant were also brought to attention, alongside the success of PB Park and the introduction of pickleball rules. Furthermore, the council celebrated the proclamation of June as Pride Month and the series of community events such as a scholarship luncheon, a 5K run, and the Shop the Town event with fireworks.
