In a meeting focused on enhancing the educational and developmental support for children in Escambia County, the Trust carefully examined the extension of their health program, a renewal of the Help Me Grow program contract, and the scope of work changes for the Gulf Coast Freedom Schools program.

The discussion acknowledged the importance of sustainability and the effectiveness of programs over time. The Executive Director highlighted the need for a five-year term to allow for proper planning and implementation, addressing the concerns raised by board members over the duration of the contract.

The conversation then shifted to the potential inclusion of additional schools in the program. A consensus was reached on the necessity of individual needs assessments for each school, involving meetings with parents, principals, and the general community to tailor services effectively. Performance and absenteeism data were also considered crucial in determining the next schools to be incorporated into the initiative.

Concerns emerged regarding the performance and budget of the Gulf Coast Freedom Schools program, especially after the withdrawal of partner organization WWF. The members’ lack of confidence in the handling of the program changes prompted a call for a more thorough evaluation of the program’s performance.
