Wildwood Crest Council Tackles Beach Policies and Infrastructure
- Meeting Overview:
The Wildwood Crest Borough Council meeting addressed a range of community matters from beach policy discussions to infrastructural improvements and public safety concerns. The assembly saw a spirited exchange on proposed plans for commercial and residential redevelopment, the environmental impact of beach erosion, and the implementation of various public safety measures.
A central topic of the meeting was the discussion around the redevelopment plan for the area extending from the old railroad station to Esther Avenue. The anticipation is that the development, which includes housing on top of offices, will stimulate economic growth by attracting new businesses, with a focus on retail, food, and personal care services. Nevertheless, apprehensions about the viability of businesses and the necessity for infrastructure enhancements were prominent. Public input touched on the importance of adding benches and picnic tables to the green belt and queries about future meetings and ordinances.
The meeting also delved into the issue of beach policies, specifically the request from Madison Resorts Wildwood Crest to consider a licensing agreement or bid process for hotels to have reserved spaces on the beach for chairs and umbrellas. The proposal, which includes having a shed on the beach for storing these items, sparked a debate on the implications for public beach space and the potential for hotels to reserve areas for their guests. The council discussed the number of beach licenses to be issued, with the intent to limit them to prevent excessive privatization of beach areas.
Public safety was another issue, with the Chief of Police reporting an increase in disturbance calls, domestic disputes, and narcotics violations, as well as 672 traffic-related offenses and 22 total arrests. The council addressed a resident’s concerns regarding traffic safety, specifically speeding and reckless driving. A grant for the Safe Streets program, aimed at identifying problem areas and solutions, was discussed in response to these concerns.
Infrastructure improvements were a recurring theme, with the Administrator providing updates on completed and ongoing projects. These include the beach bump-out project, the Crest Arch Pavilion, beach and dune construction, and the sunset Lake State Channel dredging. Additionally, the council addressed plans for road improvements on New Jersey Avenue, the FEMA application for the Washington Avenue flood mitigation project, and the reconstruction of municipal building bathrooms for handicap accessibility.
Environmental concerns also came to the fore, with discussions on the long-term impact of sand migration, beach erosion, and the potential loss of the bay over time. The council deliberated on the acquisition of land for the disposal of dredged sand and sediment and the possible environmental impact of these dredging projects. Skepticism was voiced about the effectiveness of a dune project and its impact on wildlife.
Another environmental topic was the prohibition of artificial turf in the borough. A resident expressed confusion and disagreement with the ordinance’s interpretation, advocating for artificial turf’s environmental and cost-saving advantages. The council invited further review and consideration of these comments.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to table the resolution on the abatement of a vendor’s fee until more information could be gathered. Additionally, the council approved change order number five for the Beach Patrol headquarters renovations, but not without a candid discussion about the necessity and oversight of such changes.
