Summit City Council Grapples with Affordable Housing and Turf Fields
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Summit City Council meeting, issues such as affordable housing, the turfing of Memorial Field, and the Juneteenth celebration sparked considerable discussion among council members and the public. The meeting, which addressed a range of topics, also included debates over the installation of stadium lights at Tatlock Field, the importance of tree protection in the city, and the allocation of funds for a new garbage truck.
A resident, Dennis White, addressed the council to dispute a news release authored by the city’s housing attorney that responded to a Gothamist article about the city’s affordable housing activities. White contested the allegations made in the news release, which suggested that individuals quoted in the Gothamist article, including himself, were advocating for affordable housing on the firehouse site because they had a financial stake in the development. He stated, “Mark McBride and I have been at lengthy meetings with the subcommittee. I have met separately with you each individually and have had numerous email communications. In all my dealings with the city and in my interview with the Gothamist, I have been consistently professional, respectful, and factual.” White called for a retraction of the false allegations.
The issue of turfing at Memorial Field was brought to the council’s attention by Henry Bassman, who presented a visual comparison of the field to another turfed field in the city. Bassman proposed turfing as a cost-effective alternative to installing lights, which would extend the usable hours for young athletes without the neighborhood impact of lights.
The controversy surrounding the proposed stadium lights at Tatlock Field was also a notable topic, with residents voicing concerns about the project’s impact on the neighborhood. The installation of turf on fields was supported by some as a means to improve accessibility for young people and to provide better playing conditions.
Councilman Jamal Boer was a focus of support during the public comments, with residents praising his character and contributions to the community. One speaker noted that Boer is a “great guy” and defended him against criticism he faced at a recent event. The William Street Community was mentioned as being particularly proud of Boer’s accomplishments. Boer himself shared his experience regarding the Juneteenth event, where he felt discouraged from speaking due to his political affiliation. He spoke on the necessity of embracing diversity of thought and called for respect in community discourse.
The council also debated several ordinances, including those related to the police department’s structure and tree protection. The latter saw strong community support, with the chair of the Summit Shade Tree Committee and a member of the Summit Environmental Commission endorsing the ordinance for its role in preserving the city’s tree canopy and promoting native species. A resident also emphasized the ordinance’s importance in maintaining the city’s trees, citing their benefits.
A financial decision made during the meeting was the authorization of a $269,000 expenditure for the purchase of a garbage truck. This was part of the 2024 capital budget and aimed at enhancing the Division of Public Works’ sanitation unit trash collection operations. Additionally, the council discussed appointing Dan Palac to the Hometown Heroes ad hoc committee, recognizing his contributions to the program, which honors local veterans.
Chief Sagorski provided a report on recent motor vehicle thefts and burglaries, stressing the need for vigilance and crime prevention measures. The council also expressed support for a paid internship program, which would offer more opportunities to a diverse group of individuals. Updates were given on the Bryant Pond project and the construction of the new firehouse, keeping the public informed on ongoing city developments.
