- Meeting Overview:
In a step towards public health and infrastructure improvement, the Livingston Town Council introduced an ordinance for the replacement of lead service lines. Additionally, an ordinance amending the official zoning map and conditional uses for public garages and gasoline filling stations was moved forward. These developments marked key points of interest during the recent town council meeting.
Ordinance 15-2024 focuses on amending Chapter 316 of the Water Code by adding a new Article 5, which addresses the crucial issue of replacing lead service lines. This ordinance passed the first reading and is slated for a final hearing on July 18th. Lead service line replacement is an essential matter given the health implications of lead in drinking water, and the council’s action aligns with broader initiatives to improve municipal water infrastructure.
The council also introduced Ordinance 16-224, proposing amendments to the official zoning map and altering Chapter 170-88 C of the Code concerning public garages and gasoline filling stations. The ordinance passed the first reading and is set for a final public hearing on July 29th. Changes to zoning laws can impact development and land use within the township, making this a subject of considerable importance.
During the consent agenda resolutions, two items were pulled for further discussion: Resolution 24-170, dealing with the milling and paving of West Oakwood Avenue, and Resolution 24-171, authorizing a change order for Suburban Consulting Engineers. The former pertains to improvements on a road often subject to complaints, while the latter involves additional engineering oversight inspection fees on a water main project that encountered unforeseen complications.
A public comment from a representative of Ascend Wellness Holdings addressed the council, inquiring about the township’s stance on class 5 cannabis retail licensing. Ascend, a multi-state cannabis company, expressed interest in partnering with local entrepreneurs, particularly social equity applicants, offering an ownership model with a majority stake for the local partner.
The council also made several announcements, including upcoming community events such as the Sanskriti Yoga Day and the July 4th celebration featuring an auto show, a swim carnival, bands, and fireworks.
