- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Cherry Hill School Board tackled a variety of issues, with the approval of a contentious cell phone policy and the discussion of preschool program funding taking center stage. The meeting also celebrated community events, addressed concerns over school safety measures, and approved the appointment of a new director of special projects.
The discussion of the cell phone policy was a portion of the meeting, drawing public comments from various community members. Concerns were raised about the provision allowing individual principals to prohibit wireless device use during lunch, with Dr. Pottowitz and community member Jim Neary arguing that this could compromise student safety, particularly for those being bullied. Rick Short objected to the teacher training programs associated with Rowan College, questioning their focus on cultural proficiency and its effect on math scores. Meanwhile, Jessica Fingerman supported a strict cell phone policy, pointing out the negative impact of device use on student academics and social skills.
Following the public comments, the board ultimately approved the cell phone policy, which had undergone a second reading. The policy now allows for the discretionary enforcement by principals at their respective schools, despite the issues raised.
Another focal point of the meeting was the preschool program, specifically its cost and funding. Discussion highlighted the financial benefits, the impact on inclusion services, and the separation of funding streams for preschool and K-12 education. The board had submitted a preschool education aid application and discussed its five-year strategic plan, emphasizing the importance of early childhood education and its financial planning.
The board members expressed frustration over communication issues within the district, particularly the lack of information on the district’s website. Community members echoed these concerns, inquiring about the transparency of information and the scheduling of committee meetings, which were notably absent from the July calendar. A community member questioned the accuracy of the district’s information regarding the location of the Kingston playground, and concerns about the number of students lacking access to technology were also raised.
In terms of school safety, a board member pointed out the absence of fences and signs that could help keep trespassers out of school premises.
The meeting also included celebratory notes, with board members applauding recent graduations, the positive impact of clapouts, and the diverse community celebration at the Cherry Hill Juneteenth event. The new student representatives from local high schools provided updates on their respective schools’ academic, athletic, and extracurricular activities.
On the administrative side, the board approved the appointment of Carolyn Roscoff as the new director of special projects, with community member Carolyn Msias speaking in support of Roscoff, commenting on her long-term investment in her work. The human resources agenda was addressed with unanimous approval of terminations, appointments, leaves of absence, salary changes, contract renewals, and other compensations.
Additionally, the board tackled business and facilities matters, approving minutes, financial reports, and resolutions for bids, transportation, insurance, and service agreements. The board also accepted donations for school programs and projects.
The superintendent’s comments underscored the importance of continuing education through the summer and ensuring student safety. The superintendent also mentioned the end of school year activities and cultural celebrations.
Finally, the meeting covered the approval of various grants, professional service agreements, and the NJ DOE 3-year language instructional program plan for the 2425 school year. A resolution authorizing acceptance of school climate change grant funds was also passed.
