- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Cranbury Township Committee meeting, community concerns took center stage as residents voiced their fears regarding speeding and traffic on Station Road. The testimonies from citizens, including a sixth-grader, highlighted the urgency of addressing road safety in the neighborhood. While the meeting covered a diverse array of topics, from the progress of township goals to upcoming events and infrastructure projects, it was the public’s outcry over traffic hazards that resonated most strongly, prompting discussions of potential measures and collaboration with county and state authorities to mitigate these issues.
The public comment section became a focal point when residents of Station Road, including Kathy Schy, expressed their anxieties about the road’s hazardous traffic conditions. Kathy Schy inquired about the feasibility of the township taking control of a portion of Station Road and the reinstatement of traffic court to combat the increasing traffic violations. Another resident, Glenn Schy, acknowledged the police department’s recent efforts to curb traffic violations through ticketing and proposed further actions to enforce speed limits throughout the town.
The committee acknowledged the gravity of the situation, with the mayor underscoring the necessity for a concerted effort with county and state entities. Previous attempts to alleviate speeding on Station Road, such as lowering speed limits, were mentioned, yet challenges in consistent enforcement were recognized as significant obstacles. The debate extended to the county’s responsibility for Station Road’s maintenance and the township’s limited authority over certain segments of the road. Continuous dialogues with county and state representatives were highlighted as essential steps towards resolving the traffic and speeding issues.
Aside from the urgent community safety concerns, the meeting delved into various achievements and ongoing initiatives within the township. The committee discussed the recent legislation picnic, where the connection between farmers and legislators was celebrated, and the value of the agricultural community was acknowledged. Construction updates were provided, including the start of work on Brickyard Road and the limited parking at Town Hall owing to school construction. Main Street was suggested as an alternative parking area for Town Hall visitors.
The committee’s work session was another point of interest, focusing on their progress against the 2024 Township committee goals. Notable discussions included the budget planning, the formation of a new park and recreation commission, road surfacing projects, and the completion of a grant application for 2025. The support for the Board of Education’s long-term construction project and the need to fill open board positions were also addressed, along with initiatives to support business associations and welcome new businesses to Cranbury Township.
Further, the committee members reviewed the status of various projects, seeking to ensure that the language used in describing goals accurately reflected specific outcomes and timelines. They emphasized the importance of aligning initiatives with township objectives, discussing building improvements for the Cranbury Volunteer Fire structures, the planting of trees and benches along the walking trail and Village Park, and road safety measures. Proposals to activate a senior subcommittee, complete the historic village signage program’s first phase, and implement the bike network plan were also discussed.
The members highlighted the need to amplify and align library programming and services with township objectives, engage in Revolution New Jersey, and address affordable housing obligations. In addition, the committee talked about supporting the library’s programming, inviting them to committee meetings, and encouraging the attendance of other boards and commissions. They also reported on the achievements of various commissions, like supporting habitat enhancement projects, utilizing the tree inventory for maintenance, and ongoing sustainable Jersey action items. Engaging with the county on a freight movement study and a flooding mitigation and resilience project were also considered.
Furthermore, the members contemplated including certain events in the mayor’s e-blast from August to October in a trifold for public distribution. The importance of these communications was underscored by their potential impact on community engagement and awareness.
