- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners tackled issues ranging from the need for improved veteran services to the debate over an offshore wind project. High on the agenda was the unanimous approval of Resolution 363, advocating for the establishment of a bus stop at the new Veterans Clinic, a step in ensuring accessible healthcare for veterans. Additionally, the Board engaged in a passionate discussion about the Atlantic Shores offshore wind project, which included concerns over environmental impacts and the call for a public hearing to increase transparency and community involvement.
The resolution to support veterans gained traction due to the significance of providing optimal access to the new clinic. The Board acknowledged the importance of convenient transportation for veterans, especially those with disabilities, and the necessity of a bus stop to facilitate their visits to the clinic.
Shifting to a more contentious subject, the Atlantic Shores offshore wind project incited rigorous debate among the commissioners. The project, which aims to construct wind turbines offshore, has raised concerns about potential environmental damage and disruption to local communities. One commissioner vehemently opposed the installation of turbines, voicing worries about the tearing up of streets and the health risks posed by radiation from the cables. As the conversation unfolded, it became evident that there was a divide on the Board regarding the best course of action.
The prospect of requesting a public hearing to deliberate on the offshore wind project was a focal point of the discussion. Opinions differed on whether the Board should formally request the hearing and how it should be conducted. Ultimately, a motion was made for the Chair or Solicitor to contact the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to request a public hearing, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and the Board’s responsibility to consider public opinion on the project.
During the meeting, the Board also discussed infrastructure and safety measures, including a resolution to install new flashing beacons on English Creek Road. Concerns were raised about tree limbs blocking the beacons’ visibility, prompting a request for Public Works to trim the trees to ensure safety and visibility. This issue underscored the Board’s dedication to proactive measures for road safety.
Another point of the meeting addressed the purchase of two Ford Transit cargo vans for the Board of Elections. The vans, approved through a roll call vote, are intended to transport voting machines and special equipment during elections. The question of whether the vans would include a rack or shelving system to secure the equipment was raised, with assurances given that the equipment would fit securely within the vans.
The Board also deliberated on a series of agreements and shared services, such as a local services agreement with the Atlantic County Community College for an adult basic education program and a shared services agreement with Bergen County for the housing of Atlantic County juveniles at the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center.
Furthermore, the commissioners considered several grant applications from state departments, professional services agreements, and contracts for various projects, including medical services for inmates and infrastructure-related projects.
The meeting also touched on legislative matters, particularly Senate Bill 2346 and Assembly 2258, which would mandate counties to establish Code Red Alert plans for at-risk individuals during extreme heat. The Board expressed reluctance due to the absence of a designated funding mechanism for the program, with concerns about the impact on industries such as farming and outdoor dining.
In public comments, an appointee to the Disabilities Advisory Board sought clarification on the appointment process, while another citizen thanked the Board for support following a family accident. The meeting concluded with recognition of a Boy Scout attending to fulfill a merit badge requirement and acknowledgments related to National Blueberry Month and the upcoming Fourth of July.
