Maplewood Council Addresses Community Safety and Transit Issues
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Maplewood Town Council meeting, community concerns were addressed, including a spike in criminal activity, problems with New Jersey Transit service, and the introduction of new ordinances affecting zoning and development regulations. The council heard from residents and officials on various matters, taking steps to address safety, transportation, and local governance.
One notable issues discussed at the meeting was the increase in criminal activity in a local neighborhood, as reported by a concerned resident. The resident detailed a series of incidents, including car break-ins, a home burglary, and a stolen car, which had impacted the sense of security in the community. In response to the plea for more night patrols and a visible police presence to deter crime, town officials acknowledged the gravity of the concerns raised and committed to following up with the police chief to explore strategies for improving neighborhood safety. Additionally, the resident’s concerns about accessibility at the local train station for individuals with mobility issues were noted, with assurances that the matter would be communicated to New Jersey Transit.
Further emphasizing the town’s transportation challenges, the council discussed the subpar service provided by New Jersey Transit. Officials presented a draft resolution aimed at urging state and federal representatives to address the issues plaginating the transit system, including the financial burden on commuters and the need for cross-honoring tickets at all stations. The resolution sparked debate over its wording and focus but was ultimately moved and seconded for further consideration. The council also unanimously approved a motion to cancel the second meeting in August.
In addition to safety and transit, the council introduced an ordinance to amend zoning and development regulations in R15 and R17 zones, which passed. This amendment is part of an ongoing effort to fine-tune local governance according to the evolving needs of the Maplewood community.
Health and social services were also prominently featured in the meeting, with a presentation from the Health Officer, Candace Davenport. Davenport highlighted success stories from these initiatives, such as housing applications and service referrals, and informed the council of health screenings, vaccines for children, and crisis intervention updates. A partnership for Maternal Child Health in Essex County was also mentioned, providing two weeks of postpartum care for insured and uninsured women, which prompted committee members to inquire about the program’s communication channels and the need for more service providers.
The council recognized the reappointment of Violet Kesler to the youth advisory committee and approved the Board of Health meeting minutes from June 5th, 2024. Administrative reports included news of two new appointments within the community development office and the acceptance of a donation from a sixth-grade class for the community fridge. Elected officials updated the council on various community initiatives, such as home sharing sessions, a cannabis manufacturing operation, affordable housing board rankings, and the announcement of a new manager for Maplewood Village. The manager was tasked with reaching out to merchants and the township committee to foster community engagement.
The council also heard requests to improve community outreach by sharing social services information at the library on township social media and translating event flyers into French to cater to the West African population in the area. Additionally, reports highlighted the scheduled events for the upcoming 4th of July, including a pet parade, an ice cream eating contest, and fireworks as part of the community’s celebration.
Lastly, the council acknowledged the efforts of staff in launching the summer season, with notable achievements such as providing nearly 300 swim lessons and hosting a successful Makos swim meet. The Maple Woodstock event and the revamping of the township’s business processes were also reported.
