The threat posed by Beach Leaf Disease to local trees, particularly a group of seven prominent beech trees in the town center, was another focal concern. The committee deliberated on the feasibility of treating the trees with a fungicide that provides approximately two years of nematode control. Concerns were raised regarding the environmental impact of such fungicides, prompting a suggestion to host a public event to increase community awareness about the disease and its management.

Amherst’s designation as a Tree City USA was celebrated, with recognition also given to UMass and Amherst College as Tree Campus USA recipients and to Eversource for achieving the Tree Line USA award. In light of this, the committee plans to issue a press release recognizing all parties’ contributions to the maintenance of the urban tree canopy.

The committee discussed the ongoing nurturing of the tree nursery, which includes the introduction of new species and the replacement of deceased trees. A complication with a water line has been identified and requires attention. Members contemplated on acquiring fastigiate tree varieties suitable for narrower spaces.

The upcoming community events include a second Saturday workday and a tree planting picnic event in August, which will involve the community in nurturing the local environment. The possible locations for this event were debated.

Moreover, the committee considered the potential for a neighborhood tree planting program, possibly in collaboration with the Housing Authority.

Regarding the solar farm project on Shutesbury Road, the committee members conveyed mixed feelings. While some hesitated to take a stand without complete information, others proposed a general opposition to solar projects that necessitate tree removal. The broader environmental implications of such projects were acknowledged, with the decision to further examine the issue after reviewing pertinent materials from prior meetings.
