- Meeting Overview:
In a move to address community concerns and maintain local quality of life, Roseland Borough Council announced plans to strengthen an existing ordinance to outright ban short-term rentals. The decision comes in response to a series of disruptions caused by properties being rented out for short periods, including issues with pools being rented and resulting in an influx of non-residents and traffic problems.
During the meeting, it was noted that the borough had already implemented strict regulations on short-term rentals in 2019, foreseeing potential issues. However, the recent increase in rental activities, leading to stressed borough personnel and disturbed residents, has prompted the council to take further action. The forthcoming ordinance aims to ensure that Roseland remains primarily a community for permanent residents, as opposed to a transient visitor destination, as the borough has no major tourist attractions such as beaches or ski slopes that would justify such rentals.
In addition to addressing the short-term rental issue, the council welcomed a new police officer to the Roseland Police Department. The officer was sworn in with a ceremony, emphasizing the importance of family support for law enforcement professionals.
Another development discussed was the approval of new pedestrian crosswalk signs designed to improve traffic safety in the center of town. These signs will alert drivers when a pedestrian is crossing by flashing lights activated by a button.
The council also prepared for upcoming community events, including a concert series and the borough’s First National Night Out, an event that fosters community-police partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer.
Lastly, the council addressed administrative matters, including the approval of the July 12th Bill list, several resolutions related to municipal operations, and public hearings on ordinances pertaining to traffic regulations and noise control. The third-quarter tax bills’ mailing was announced, with an extended grace period for payment provided to residents.
