- Meeting Overview:
The Brookline School Committee discussed a series of significant school projects and plans during their recent meeting. The focal point was the deliberation of a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the utilization of the Newbury campus to house Pierce Middle School amidst its construction phase. This discussion highlighted concerns over language that could limit after-school programming and the use of the loading dock.
In examining the MOU, the committee members scrutinized the provisions set for the Pierce Middle School’s temporary relocation to Newbury. The document outlined extended hours of operation, caregiver and parent access, space allocations for school programs, and staff parking. During the review process, a point of contention arose over a clause that appeared to prohibit after-school programs within the building. The committee debated this phrasing, considering its potential to disrupt school operations. There was a consensus on the necessity for clear language in the MOU to avoid unintended restrictions on activities vital to the school’s function.
The conversation then expanded to address the tone and completeness of the documents related to school facilities. A discussion ensued on the practical challenges of accommodating meal spaces for students, particularly the need for large indoor spaces which necessitated some students eating in classrooms. Additionally, there was confusion regarding the inclusion of the eighth grade and the labeling of areas within the school, prompting calls for more clarity.
Another topic of interest revolved around the logistics of the summer projects. Karen, whose last name was not provided, detailed the relocation plans for the beep classrooms and administrative staff from Clark Road to various locations, with Pierce teachers scheduled to move by June 26th. The committee reviewed the distribution and cleanup of furniture at the Old Lincoln and Newbury Fisher Hill sites. There was also a proposal to offer unneeded items from Pierce to local groups and other school districts. The financial aspects of these relocations were discussed, including a set budget and considerations for compensating teachers for the extra time spent on packing and unpacking.
Sarah G, likely from the public buildings department, provided information on the summer work planned for Baker, Baldwin, and New Lincoln schools. These renovations included flooring replacement, painting, and HVAC system overhauls. The committee examined the preservation commission’s report on Baldwin, the electrical service upgrade at Clark Road, and the various funding sources supporting these projects. The necessity for comprehensive information about the financing of each project was underscored during the discussions.
The technology in Brookline classrooms was also on the agenda, with the committee noting the widespread use of mounted projection systems, such as ultra-short throw and Smartboard technology. They discussed the transition to new technology in newer buildings, opting for projection systems over whiteboards when replacements are necessary. Additionally, the committee deliberated on the reorganization of Furniture, Fixture, and Equipment (FF&E) into one category for better management.
Various ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects across the district were also mentioned, including electrical service upgrades, heat pump installations, gym mat and scoreboard replacements at Haz school, and general refurbishments at Lauren and Runkle schools. A visit to the Lincoln School was planned to observe the completed work, and it was decided not to schedule a meeting in September to accommodate the busy period for staff.
Lastly, there was a brief mention of a possible executive session to discuss strategies related to the sale of the two Clark Road properties.
