- Meeting Overview:
The Sweetwater City Commission has decided to maintain the current millage rate for fiscal year 2024-2025 while also planning significant investments in infrastructure, public safety, and community programs. The proposed millage rate will remain flat at 3.5634, which is expected to generate additional revenue due to increased property values. The commission also discussed the allocation of new grant revenues and the development of the city’s first-ever capital budget and Five-Year Plan.
Key to the commission’s agenda was the fiscal planning for the upcoming year, which includes maintaining the millage rate steady. This decision aims to balance the city’s financial stability with taxpayer considerations. The flat millage rate, along with increased property values, is projected to raise an additional $1,897,000 in property tax revenue.
The Sweetwater Police Department is slated to increase its force by adding three new officers, bringing the total to 76, and will also see a reduction in officer pension contributions. The budget includes funding for new equipment, surveillance cameras, and police vehicles. Other city employees and union members are set to receive a cost of living adjustment, with capital funding earmarked for significant projects such as infrastructure improvements on Fifth Street and Fifth Terrace, sidewalk repair and replacement, tree planting initiatives, and a new website with enhanced online services.
The capital budget, supported by grant revenues from federal, state, and county sources, also addresses infrastructure projects. These include drainage and street improvements, a $1 million investment from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and contributions from Miami-Dade County and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for a police command center.
Furthermore, the commission considered an ordinance to revise city code regarding CO (presumably related to carbon monoxide) and officers. The proposed change reflects updates to current practices in other governments and aims to eliminate conflicts arising from automatic leave periods for CO exposure, shifting towards a more case-by-case approach.
Lastly, an update was provided on the Sweetwater Civil Air Patrol Squadron, highlighting the installation of a new flight simulator and plans to offer unparalleled training experiences for cadets.
