- Meeting Overview:
The Lawrence City Council meeting unfolded with the approval of several disclosure forms for city employees engaged in the senior tax work-off program and a zoning discussion tabled pending review, but the highlight was the unanimous decision to name the South Lawrence East athletic fields after baseball icon David Ortiz. The council also endorsed the Spicket River cleanup effort, organized by Groundwork Lawrence.
The proposal to name the athletic complex in honor of David Ortiz, known affectionately as “Big Papi,” was presented by the Deputy Director of the Department of Public Works. Ortiz, renowned for his storied career with the Boston Red Sox and contributions to the community, was cited as a role model whose influence transcends his athletic achievements and Dominican heritage. The proposal garnered support from multiple officials, including the mayor and school superintendent, who spoke to Ortiz’s far-reaching impact and the inspiration he provides to the youth of Lawrence.
In addition to the naming initiative, the council reviewed the Spicket River cleanup, an annual event led by Groundwork Lawrence. The representative from Groundwork Lawrence assured the council of their preparations to manage littering effectively during the cleanup. Before granting their approval, the council sought and received confirmation that the Parks and Recreation Department had cleared the event. The discussion around the cleanup focused on logistical clarifications, with the council expressing their full support upon resolving all inquiries.
The meeting also briefly addressed a zoning request related to the property located on South Broadway. The request proposed a change in zoning from R2 to B1, but the council, adhering to standard procedure, agreed to table the discussion until the planning board completed its review, scheduled for September 3. The attorney representing the applicant acknowledged the legal process and the need to follow it, without further debate.
Furthermore, the council approved a series of disclosure forms for city employees who earn credit towards their property taxes by working as poll workers on election days and participating in the senior tax work-off program. Each form received individual approval, destined for full council consideration with a favorable recommendation. The city clerk reminded the council of the upcoming National Night Out and the possibility that the next meeting could be rescheduled to accommodate the event.
