- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Westport Board of Health highlighted several significant public health issues, including the state’s new initiative to ensure safe drinking water from private wells and updates on mosquito-borne illnesses.
The most notable development is the allocation of $100,000 by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to explore the safety of drinking water from private wells. This funding, included in the FY 25 state budget signed by the governor on July 29, will support a study to make recommendations for a Statewide program to ensure safe drinking water for all residents. The study represents a step forward in addressing concerns about private well water safety, which affects many Massachusetts residents. Further details can be found in the full press release at www.whatsinyourwellwater.org.
The Board of Health also received a detailed presentation from public health nurse Linda Pierce on eye health and the risks associated with ticks and mosquitoes during the summer months. Pierce advised residents to eat a balanced diet rich in vitamin A, exercise regularly, and practice good hygiene to maintain healthy vision. She also emphasized the importance of protective measures against ticks and mosquitoes, which can carry diseases such as Lyme disease, Triple E, and West Nile Virus. Pierce provided practical tips, such as wearing long sleeves and using repellents, to minimize the risk of bites.
The meeting also covered updates on mosquito-borne illnesses. The Department of Public Health reported 15 Triple E positive mosquito samples from Bristol and Plymouth counties and 48 West Nile Virus samples collected this season. As a result, risk levels in the region have been elevated, and personal protection measures are strongly recommended.
Additionally, the Board of Health announced upcoming blood drives scheduled for August 29 and September 19 at Whit at Westport. The drives are part of ongoing efforts to maintain an adequate blood supply during the summer months.
Lastly, the Board discussed International Overdose Awareness Day, which is observed on August 31. This global campaign aims to end overdose, remember those who have died without stigma, and support the grieving families and friends left behind. Local events in Dartmouth will provide an opportunity for public mourning and raise awareness about the risks of overdose.
