Kenilworth School Board Celebrates Academic Gains, Appoints New Principal Amid Construction Updates
- Meeting Overview:
The Kenilworth School Board meeting covered advancements in student academic performance, construction project updates, and community engagement initiatives.
The meeting commenced with a report from Superintendent Kyle C. Arlington, who lauded the opening of the new turf field and track. The ceremony celebrating this achievement included an inaugural run by the track team and recognition of fall student athletes. Arlington thanked the board for its unwavering support, emphasizing the project’s alignment with the ongoing referendum efforts.
Board member Mr. Ganella provided updates on various construction projects. The HVAC project, nearing completion at 90%, had managed to avoid disrupting instructional programs. The new football field and track, now open for public use during non-school hours, were reported as fully functional with minor details being addressed in the punch list phase. A new scoreboard is expected to be installed before the first game. The addition project is 13% complete, with the foundation and most underground electrical and plumbing work finished. Safety protocols during construction were discussed, particularly concerning emergency exit routes.
In a academic update, Director of Curriculum Instruction and Innovation, Miss Samantha Hle, and acting principal Miss Malin Pavle presented the results of the NJ GPA tests taken by juniors in March. They reported a substantial increase in graduation readiness, with 92% of students meeting the benchmark in English Language Arts (ELA), up from 24% in 2022, and math readiness rising from 28.9% to 54.2%. The improvement was attributed to the collaborative efforts of instructional teams and the dedication of the teaching staff. Additional pathways for graduation readiness were also discussed, including standardized test scores from the PSAT and SAT.
Further discussions centered on the district’s AP scores, which achieved the highest average in five years, with an average score of 3.09. The introduction of two new AP courses and plans for another course next year were announced. The board credited the teachers and administrative support for this accomplishment and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among educators, parents, and the community to maintain high academic standards.
The appointment of Mr. John Pillo as the new principal of Burley Middle School was another key highlight. Superintendent Arlington praised Pillo for his vision for advancing STEM and humanities education and his compassionate approach to fostering a supportive school community. Pillo’s appointment followed a rigorous interview process involving multiple stakeholder groups, and his leadership is expected to elevate the school’s standards.
Community engagement was a recurring theme throughout the meeting. Plans for Town Hall meetings and informational sessions for parents were announced. Concerns about safety and the school environment were raised during the public comment period, with parents urging the board to address issues such as drug use and harassment to improve the school’s reputation.
Financial updates were provided, including preparations for the annual audit and a minor increase in school lunch prices. The board discussed resolutions related to post-retirement investment options and severance contributions, which are expected to yield tax savings for employees and the district. The ratification of the teachers’ contract was celebrated, with ongoing negotiations for secretaries, aides, and custodians expected to conclude by September.
The discussion also touched on the school choice program, with questions about its net benefits and costs. The board clarified that the district receives approximately $2.5 million for 163 students through the program and emphasized the financial contribution it makes to the district’s health. Plans for a detailed presentation on the program’s benefits were mentioned.
