Keansburg School Board Discusses English Language Learner Programs and After-School Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Keansburg School Board meeting covered a range of topics, with a primary focus on the English Language Learner (ELL) programs, after-school initiatives, and the approval of multiple personnel and administrative items.
Christine F., a presenter at the meeting, detailed the results of the Access for ELL testing from the spring session. The annual test, administered to all English Language Learners (ELLs) within a specific testing window, assesses students in four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Christine shared that 67 students were tested, with results indicating that a portion of students were at the developing level. Specifically, 40% of the students scored at level three, which is categorized as developing, and the majority of the ELL students are Hispanic, forming 88% of the subgroup.
Christine also highlighted various initiatives to support the ELL students, including a parent advisory group, extended learning opportunities funded by Title III, and new technologies like scanning pens to aid in mainstream instruction. Additionally, the Talking Point app will now translate not only text messages but also attached documents into the home language of the students’ families, making communication more accessible.
Following the discussion on ELL programs, the Board transitioned to the topic of after-school programs. It was mentioned that the approval of several personnel items related to after-school programs was contingent on grant funding. If the grants are not received, the board will explore alternative funding sources and programs, including the Champions program and a potential tutoring grant for grades three and four. The Family Friendly Center will also be available for students in grades K-2.
The superintendent recommended positive action on numerous personnel and administrative items, including resignations, new hires, substitutes, and various after-school program roles. The board approved these items with a few exceptions, specifically tabling two names for further consideration.
Additional approvals included the acceptance of donations, such as supplies and backpacks, and two Boston 18 pianos for the district. The board also approved several curriculum documents and revised school hours for the district.
The meeting concluded with board members expressing their appreciation for the efforts to prepare the schools for the new academic year. They noted the improvements in the school buildings and extended their best wishes to the students and staff for a successful school year.
