- Meeting Overview:
At the recent East Brunswick Town Council meeting, Mayor Brad Cohen emphasized the successful acquisition of several grants that will fund various township projects without increasing the burden on property taxpayers. He highlighted that many of the resolutions on the consent agenda relate to either the application for, acceptance of, or utilization of grant money.
Mayor Cohen expressed satisfaction with the township’s ability to secure these funds, which will be used for necessary enhancements and operations within the community. He noted that this approach allows East Brunswick to improve services and infrastructure without relying heavily on property taxes. This method of funding is particularly beneficial in maintaining and elevating township amenities and services while keeping fiscal responsibility in check.
Another topic discussed was the upcoming capital improvements for the Crystal Springs pool. The council introduced an ordinance appropriating $450,000 from the pool utility Capital Improvement fund for various enhancements. These include replacing the filtration system at the water park, making improvements to the water slides, and upgrading the sound system. This funding comes from the pool utility, meaning it is sourced from the fees paid by patrons of the water park rather than from general taxpayer funds.
The meeting also covered routine but important actions, such as the approval of previous meeting minutes and the adoption of various resolutions on the consent agenda. One resolution of note involved the purchase of a new wheel loader for the Department of Public Works (DPW), which had been previously budgeted and planned for.
Additionally, the council acknowledged the successful community events organized by the Recreation Department over the summer, including concerts, movie nights, and s’mores in the park. These events saw significant participation from residents, with particular praise for the Youth Council’s volunteer efforts during these activities.
Public comments included inquiries about the construction timeline for a new Chick-fil-A on Route 18 and adjustments to the garbage pickup schedule due to the upcoming Labor Day holiday. The council confirmed that Chick-fil-A construction had commenced and clarified the altered garbage pickup schedule.
Lastly, the council celebrated the achievement of 13 East Brunswick JV and varsity cheerleaders who have been invited to perform at Disney World in their holiday parade. This recognition was based on their outstanding performance at a recent cheer camp.
