- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Little Falls Town Council meeting, members focused on several topics, including the potential renaming of Memorial Park to honor Medal of Honor recipient Franklin Sigler, updates on ongoing community projects, and concerns about neighborhood safety.
The proposal to rename Memorial Park to Frank Sigler Memorial Park was a notable moment in the meeting. Steve Eldridge, a member of the local American Legion, advocated for this change, highlighting Sigler’s heroic actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima and his subsequent service in the Little Falls Police Department. Eldridge suggested that the renaming coincide with Veterans Day ceremonies on November 11. Councilwoman Christine Hablitz supported the proposal, recalling previous discussions about honoring veterans in the community. Mayor James Damiano noted prior issues concerning a missing plaque honoring Sigler, which was later found by the Department of Public Works but did not fully honor Sigler’s military service.
The council also addressed the newly opened Stevens Avenue parking lot. Mayor Damiano provided an update, stating that while the lot, located behind the former PNC Bank, is only partially completed, it is now accessible to the public. The lot, which offers nearly 100 parking spaces, will require a brief closure in the future for final asphalt top-coating and striping. This decision to open the lot in its current state aims to support local businesses immediately. The mayor acknowledged the need for the Department of Public Works to paint directional arrows and complete the striping soon, given changes in the circulation plan.
Another project discussed was the streetscape improvements along Stevens Avenue. Mayor Damiano explained that although there had been delays due to late electrical drawings from Public Service, the contractor is optimistic about completing the work before the school year begins. Damiano emphasized that the construction would not disrupt school traffic during drop-offs and pickups.
In addressing budgetary matters, the council approved several resolutions, including contract modifications for the streetscape project and Willmore Park. One resolution included a small increase of approximately $28,000 for the streetscape project due to delays and the need to replace unusable materials.
Community safety was another issue raised during the meeting. Jennifer Coppola, a resident of Little Falls for 31 years, shared her ongoing struggles with excessive noise from her neighbors, which she linked to a decline in her quality of life. Coppola expressed her frustration, stating, “I really can’t use my yard on a regular basis,” and detailed instances of retaliation from her neighbors. The council president advised her to contact the business administrator and emphasized the importance of notifying the police during disturbances.
Anna Crer, another resident, recounted a recent break-in at her home, which heightened her concerns about neighborhood safety. She requested better street lighting on First Avenue, describing the area as very dark with increased suspicious activity. The council acknowledged her concerns and promised to review the lighting situation. Mayor Damiano suggested coordinating with the Public Service and Gas Company to enhance street lighting and potentially install brighter LED options. Council members discussed the potential for increased police patrols and the installation of “dead end” signs to deter speeding and unauthorized cut-through traffic.
The meeting also included expressions of condolences for the recently deceased Congressman Bill Pascrell. Council members recognized Pascrell’s contributions, particularly in securing funding for the Pekman River and his influence throughout New Jersey. Councilman Michael Murphy expressed condolences and highlighted upcoming initiatives for Domestic Violence Prevention Month, including collaborative efforts with local organizations and a presentation planned for senior citizens alongside the prosecutor’s office.
Additionally, the council provided updates on various community events and health department matters. The local library recently hosted a Polish Cultural dancing and food night, and upcoming events include a Royal Tea Club gathering and a townwide yard sale. Councilman Jayna Patel thanked the health department for their annual report and highlighted upcoming health events, including a children’s immunization clinic and a program on understanding memory loss.
