- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Fort Myers Beach Learning Center Advisory Board focused on topics such as pedestrian safety, the underground exhibit at the Mount House, and the museum’s accreditation process.
The most point of discussion was the development of sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety. Members debated the necessity of sidewalks, considering their placement around the Beach Baptist area and across the street. The board acknowledged that sidewalks already exist in some areas but emphasized the need for new sidewalks to enhance safety and accessibility. The idea of coordinating sidewalk construction with ongoing redevelopment projects, particularly those involving Beach Baptist, was suggested to minimize disruption. There was also a proposal to extend sidewalks from one end of Connecticut Street to another, especially in relation to stormwater projects, to streamline efforts and reduce traffic disturbances.
Safety was a recurring theme, with discussions on the need for improved outdoor lighting and repairs to the electrical system. New visitor navigation signs are planned to enhance public accessibility, especially since the property is open seven days a week. ADA compliance concerns were highlighted, particularly the need for Braille signage to aid visually impaired visitors.
Attention then turned to the underground exhibit at the Mount House, which has not been shown for two years due to funding constraints. Updates on grant applications revealed that a significant state arts grant was not awarded. Despite this setback, the board discussed pursuing future funding opportunities and the possibility of developing a smaller, in-house exhibit as a temporary solution while exploring larger funding avenues. The projected costs for a larger-scale project exceed $100,000 due to the expensive nature of necessary equipment. The importance of improvements in lighting and electrical systems within the underground exhibit was emphasized to enhance visitor experience and safety.
The meeting also delved into the museum’s accreditation process through the American Alliance for Museums (AAM). The accreditation is a and multifaceted process aimed at increasing professionalism and potentially opening up new funding sources. The board discussed the current status of the museum’s collection management, revealing that there are over 15,000 items in the collection, many of which lack clear documentation regarding ownership. The implications of Florida property law on items without known ownership were explored, stating that three public notices must be published over a six-month period before the museum can claim items that may not belong to the town. Despite these hurdles, it was acknowledged that the museum does not need to own every item to move forward with the accreditation process, as long as there is clarity on what is owned.
Marketing initiatives were also a key focus, with a digital campaign using Google Ads and direct mail flyers sent to 20,000 households in the Bonita Springs and South Fort Myers areas to raise awareness and attract visitors. The campaign’s effectiveness was questioned as initial responses were minimal. The direct mail included coupons and a QR code for tracking and engagement. Reports on the effectiveness of the digital marketing efforts were requested, which staff agreed to provide.
The board discussed various upcoming events, particularly emphasizing the first Friday event on September 6, which will focus on the Latinx history of the area. Additionally, a partnership with the Florida Public Archaeology Network will introduce a kayaking program coinciding with Hispanic Heritage Month and Latino Conservation Week. The Friends of Mount House are organizing an event featuring songwriters Tim James and Jeff Cohen, with ticket sales already underway.
The meeting also touched on park developments, including the management of storm debris and the ongoing beach renourishment project. The future of Newton Park was discussed, with plans to utilize it for the sand nourishment program until December. Temporary fencing and restroom facilities are being set up, and paid parking is being considered. The potential acquisition of a parcel known as the Strand for transforming it into a pocket park was raised, emphasizing the importance of resilience in design due to its vulnerability in past storms.
